Car Insurance in Kerala

Handshake Image

Kerala has one of the highest car ownership rates in India, with nearly 63% of households owning at least one car. And due to its strong “car culture”, cities like Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode often face heavy traffic. This means drivers can frequently end up in stop-and-go traffic, where even a small lapse in attention can lead to minor collisions, dents and scratches.

That’s why having car insurance in Kerala is more than just a legal formality – it’s a practical necessity. It helps cover repair costs for your car, and compensates others in your place if you accidentally damage their vehicle in an accident.

At IndusInd General Insurance, we offer car insurance plans specifically designed for Kerala car owners. For instance, our plans cover damage due to natural disasters like floods, which are quite common in Kerala.

We also offer a simple claims process where you can file claims on your phone using the Self-i app. So, whether you’re driving through Kerala’s busy city streets or scenic hill roads, we ensure you’re covered.

Why Should You Buy Car Insurance in Kerala?

Covers Flood and Landslides

Events like floods and landslides are common in Kerala, especially in Northern districts like Kannur and Kasaragod, due to heavy monsoon rains. Car insurance provides coverage against engine damage that can occur during these floods due to water entering your car’s engine.

Covers Accidental Damage

Kerala is a popular tourist destination, so its roads can get even more crowded from December to February, increasing the risk of accidents. But with car insurance, you’re not stuck paying for car repairs in case of damage from accidents or collisions. Our plans take care of that for you!

Quick Cashless Claims

We offer cashless claims at 11,000+ network garages* for accidents and natural disasters, keeping your out-of-pocket costs minimal. Filing your claims is also easy with the Self-i app’s video claims feature, so you get quick repair services with almost no paperwork.

24/7 Roadside Assistance

We offer 24/7 roadside assistance for disruptions like flat tyres and fuel delivery. Plus, car breakdowns in heavy rainfall can disrupt your plans and leave you stranded, especially when you’re far from home. Thankfully, our car insurance has you covered.

Para

Stats About Kerala Traffic

With 7.83 lakh new vehicle registrations in 2024-25, Kerala’s total number of registered vehicles in Kerala is now 1.82 crore. The state also saw the highest number of EV vehicle usage in March 2025. These figures, combined with cities like Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram having higher rates of road accidents, highlight the need for robust car insurance solutions in Kerala. And that’s where we can help!

Why 5 Crore+ Policyholders Trust Us?

At IndusInd General Insurance, we understand the importance of road safety. That’s why we offer comprehensive protection with customisable add-ons and 100% digital policies for car owners in Kerala.

criterio

Pay-As-You-Drive Insurance (PAYD)

Pay-as-you-drive insurance charges you based on the kilometres you actually drive, ranging from 2,500 to 10,500 km yearly*. E.g., if you rely on the Kochi metro for daily commutes to work and only use your car on weekends, opting for PAYD can be more cost-effective. Our advanced telematics provides accurate kilometre tracking with flexible top-up options so you’re always covered.

criterio

Own-Damage Car Insurance (OD)

If you already have a third-party cover, you can buy our own-damage insurance to cover your car. This plan will cover damage due to accidents, natural disasters, and total loss due to theft or major accidents. For example, if your car’s undercarriage is damaged from driving through Munnar’s rough roads, this plan will cover the repair costs so you don’t have to pay out of pocket.

Third-Party Car Insurance (TP)

Third-party insurance is mandatory for every car owner in Kerala. It covers damage caused to other people, their vehicles or property by your car. Without it, you can face fines ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 and face 3 months of imprisonment. That’s why we offer both long (3 years*) and short-term (1 year) plan options for this plan. Plus, this is also our most affordable car insurance plan!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is car insurance in Kerala?

Our car insurance plan prices start from ₹238 per month*. But premiums can vary based on the type of plan you opt for. For example, third-party car insurance rates start at ₹2,094 per year* and the amount will be based on your car’s engine capacity. These rates are also set by the IRDAI and are uniform across all insurance companies in Kerala.

For comprehensive car plans, premiums will vary based on your car’s IDV (current market value), car make & model, location, and the add-on covers you’ve chosen to add to your plan.

How can I reduce my car insurance premiums in Kerala?

Here are some ways you can reduce your car insurance premiums –

Buy and Renew Car Insurance Online: With us, you can get up to a 90% discount* on your car insurance premiums if you choose to buy your car insurance online – either through our website or mobile app.

Choose the Right IDV: Ensure you choose the correct IDV amount since it has a direct impact on your premiums. A higher IDV means more coverage, but it can raise your premiums. Hence, ensure you choose an amount that’s high enough to offer enough coverage but not so high that your premiums end up exceeding your budget.

Maintain your NCB Discount: We offer an NCB discount of up to 50%* on your renewal premiums for 5 claim-free years. To ensure you can still use the coverage offered under your car insurance policy without giving up your NCB discount, we recommend getting the NCB Retention add-on, so you can file 1 claim during the policy period in case you do need to file a claim.

Install Anti-Theft Devices: We offer a 2.5% discount* on premiums if you’ve installed ARAI-approved anti-theft devices on your car. Doing this also reduces the risk profile of your car and may lead to more discounts on your premiums.

Automobile Memberships: If you have a membership at a recognised automobile association, you get an extra 5% discount* on premiums.

Disclaimer: These discount percentages are subject to change based on the age of the vehicle, vehicle make and model, and your chosen plan options. You can always contact us to ensure you have the most up-to-date information on your applicable discount percentages.

Is 3-year insurance mandatory for a new car in Kerala?

Yes, as per the IRDAI’s mandate, all new car owners are legally required to buy a 3-year car insurance with third-party coverage. This third-party coverage can either be bought on its own as a third-party car insurance plan, or you can buy a 3-year comprehensive plan* that bundles third-party and own damage coverage under one plan. We recommend going for a comprehensive plan since a third-party plan will not cover your car for any accidental damage.

Is personal accident cover mandatory for Kerala car insurance?

Yes, a personal accident (PA) cover for the owner-driver is mandatory as per the IRDAI. It covers medical costs for any injuries you may suffer due to an accident. It also covers loss of life due to accidents and offers a payout of up to ₹15 lakhs* to the policyholder’s family.

So if you don’t have one, we recommend adding this cover to your car insurance plan during purchase to ensure legal compliance. If you own multiple vehicles, you don’t need to buy multiple PA covers; a single standalone PA policy/cover will suffice.

What are the essential traffic do's and don'ts for safe driving in Kerala?

Do: Carry updated insurance documents, use fog lights during monsoons, drive cautiously on ghat roads, follow eco-zone rules and use indicators early.

Don't: Overspeed on highways, ignore parking signs, drink and drive, use unnecessary high beams or neglect vehicle maintenance.

Safe driving can help maintain affordable insurance premiums since more claims can increase your risk profile, leading to higher premiums during policy purchase or renewal.

Disclaimer:*T&C Apply. For more details on risk factors, terms conditions, brochure, and exclusions, please read the policy wording and CIS carefully before concluding a sale.>The total no. of customers insured data is for FY24 and has been picked up from the number of lives insured for Health, Personal Accident, Overseas Travel, Domestic Travel, Workmen Compensation and Crop Insurance, Weather LOB & Fire LOB provided by IRDAI count that is master policy count. Other than these LOBs, we have also provided data for the number of certificates issued. The premium mentioned for car Insurance excludes taxes for the private car model Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 with a cubic capacity of less than 1000 cc for a 1-year Own Damage Insurance policy for an IDV of ₹2,34,728. The premium used is 2,853/year as of 1 March 2023 and then converted into a per-month basis, which gives us ₹238/month (2,853/12).The discount varies basis vehicle specifications, No Claim Bonus discount and Geographical location of the vehicle to be insured. Discounts have been calculated on the basis of the rates prescribed under erstwhile Indian Motor Tariff. Discounts are applicable only to the Own Damage section and discounts may vary as per the vehicle make, model, RTO, age of the vehicle and addition of add-ons like InduInd Limit Sure-Pay As You Drive.
