RTO Jammu
Jammu is a major city in Jammu and Kashmir and sees heavy traffic throughout the year. The city has a growing number of vehicles on its roads, with thousands of cars, bikes, and commercial vehicles. Being a popular tourist spot and an important city for business, Jammu experiences high vehicle movement, especially during the tourist season and on important travel routes.
The RTO Jammu plays a key role in managing all vehicle-related services in the city. It works under the Jammu and Kashmir Transport Department and follows the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The RTO code for Jammu is JK02. The RTO is responsible for giving driving licences, registering new vehicles, and making sure all vehicles follow safety rules. It also handles permits for commercial vehicles and collects road taxes.
You can get most RTO services both online and offline. You can visit the official Parivahan website to apply for a driving licence, register your vehicle, or check your challan online. If you prefer to visit in person, you can go to the RTO office in Jammu. The RTO makes sure that all vehicle owners and drivers follow traffic rules and road safety laws to keep the roads safe for everyone.
Jammu RTO Functions and Roles
Vehicle Registration
RTO Jammu handles registration for all new vehicles, including cars, bikes and commercial vehicles. It issues temporary registration when you buy a new vehicle and permanent registration after verification. You can also transfer vehicle ownership and renew your registration when it expires.
Driving Licences
The RTO issues learner's licences for new drivers and permanent driving licences after you pass the test. You can renew your expired licence, get a duplicate if you lose it or upgrade your licence to drive different vehicle types. International driving permits are also available for travelling abroad.
Vehicle Permits
Commercial vehicles need special permits to operate legally. RTO Jammu provides permits for taxis, buses and goods carriers. You can apply for temporary permits for short-term use or national permits if you want to travel across different states.
Road Tax Collection
Every vehicle owner must pay road tax to use public roads. The RTO collects lifetime road tax when you first register your vehicle. For some vehicles, you need to pay annual road tax every year to keep your registration active.
Fitness Certificate
Commercial vehicles and old private vehicles need a fitness certificate to prove they are safe to drive. RTO Jammu checks your vehicle's condition and issues the certificate. You must renew this certificate regularly to keep driving legally.
Pollution Certificate (PUC)
All vehicles must have a valid Pollution Under Control certificate. The RTO helps you get this certificate by checking your vehicle's pollution levels. You need to renew your PUC every six months to make sure your vehicle doesn't harm the environment.
