Accident Cover for Owner/Driver
Bus Insurance
Bus Insurance is a type of commercial vehicle insurance that is specifically designed for buses. It is a contract between the insurer and the bus owner (or fleet operator) & aims at providing financial aid during any unforeseen mishaps like accidents, theft, fire, and so on.
But is a bus Insurance plan mandatory? – Under the Motor Vehicles Act, at least third-party cover is mandatory, yet comprehensive plans go further, offsetting repair bills that could otherwise cripple operations. A recent review in Chhattisgarh found that road accidents in the state jumped by over 10% in 2024 compared to the previous year. And the key factor was that numerous identified “black spots” had not been rectified by the authorities.
A policy from IndusInd General Insurance (previously Reliance General Insurance) shields private owners, fleet operators, schools, travel companies and public-transport authorities alike, covering third-party liabilities as well as damage to the bus itself. Optional add-ons, like Passenger Personal-Accident cover or Nil Depreciation, let you tailor protection to every route and risk.
Our digital portal and the IndusInd Self-i App enable instant quotes, policy downloads and renewals, while 24/7 roadside assistance ensures help reaches you anywhere, anytime, all without tedious paperwork.

Why Is Bus Insurance Important?
My Employer is taking care of my Health Insurance and so I do not need one
Legal and Regulatory Compliance
By having bus insurance, you automatically stay on the right side of the law. This benefit is indirect but extremely important as you avoid fines and penalties from traffic authorities. Also, you easily maintain your vehicle’s permits and licences, since valid insurance is required for the renewal of commercial vehicle permits.

Financial Protection Against Third-Party Claims
If your bus is involved in an accident that causes injury or property damage to someone else (for instance, hitting another vehicle or a pedestrian), you could face huge compensation claims. Bus insurance shields you from these third-party liabilities. This is especially crucial for commercial buses, which have higher exposure on roads and thus higher third-party risk.

Coverage for Own Damage
With a comprehensive policy, damages to your own bus are covered as well. Whether your bus sustains damage from a collision, a fire, or gets completely totaled (constructive total loss) due to an accident or natural calamity, your insurance will pay for the repairs or compensate you for the insured declared value (IDV) if it’s beyond repair.

Asset Protection from Non-Accident Risks
Buses face risks beyond just road accidents. A comprehensive policy typically covers scenarios like theft, fire damage and natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, storms, cyclones, etc., which can severely damage or destroy vehicles. Having insurance means these unpredictable events won’t ruin you financially, and the policy will compensate for repairs or total loss as applicable.

Protection for Owner/Driver
Bus insurance policies automatically include personal accident cover for the owner-driver. This means if the driver (who might also be the owner) is injured or passes away in an accident, the policy provides compensation up to a certain limit (often ₹15 lakh for owner-driver as mandated).

Business Continuity
Ultimately, one of the biggest advantages of bus insurance is the composure it offers. Knowing that major risks are covered allows you to run your transport operations confidently. If an accident or mishap occurs, you have the backing of the insurance company to handle claims and costs. This stability is valuable for business continuity.
Who Needs Bus Insurance (Types of Buses Covered)
Bus insurance is intended for all types of passenger-carrying commercial vehicles, so if you operate any of the following, you should have bus insurance:
Private Buses
These are buses owned by private companies or individuals, such as corporate office buses (shuttle buses for employees) or tour and charter buses used by travel companies. If you own a bus for transporting groups (for example, a tourist coach), bus insurance will cover your vehicle during its operations.
School Buses
Educational institutions or their transport contractors must insure school buses that carry students and staff. School bus insurance is vital to protect against accidents involving children and to meet regulatory requirements.
Public Transport Buses
Government or state transport corporation buses and city buses (including intercity or interstate coaches) are also covered under commercial bus insurance policies. These policies address the high exposure to accidents and passenger liabilities that come with public transportation.
Other Passenger-Carrying Vehicles
This includes minibuses, vans and any other commercial vehicles configured to carry passengers for hire. Essentially, any vehicle used to transport passengers (besides private cars) falls into this category and requires appropriate insurance coverage.
Benefits of Buying IndusInd Bus Insurance
Win More Contracts
Many government and corporate tenders will not even consider your bid unless every bus comes with valid comprehensive insurance. Keeping an up-to-date policy instantly ticks that compliance box and pushes your quotation to the top of the pile.
Safeguard Your Brand Reputation
News of a single uninsured crash can explode on social media and wipe out years of goodwill overnight. Having proper cover lets you compensate victims quickly and show the public you run a responsible, passenger-first operation.
Boost Driver & Crew Confidence
When the team knows medical bills and legal hassles are handled by the insurer, they concentrate on safe driving instead of “what-ifs.” That faith in their boss often translates into calmer journeys and happier passengers.
Stay Permit-Ready & Avoid Penalties
Transport authorities impose hefty fines and can even suspend operations if a bus is caught without valid insurance papers during permit checks. Keeping your policy live saves you from surprise penalties and service disruptions.

IndusInd Bus Insurance: Inclusions & Exclusions
What is Covered?
Accidental Damage: If your bus is involved in a road accident or collision, any damage to the vehicle is covered. For example, if the bus collides with another vehicle or a wall, the insurance will pay for the repair of your bus’s damaged parts (after deductibles).
Third-Party Liability: All bus insurance policies include third-party liability cover by law. This means if your bus causes injury, death or property damage to a third party, we will compensate the affected third party on your behalf.
Natural Calamities: Natural disasters can be particularly devastating to vehicles. Bus insurance will cover any loss or damage caused by events like earthquakes, floods, cyclones, hurricanes, storms, landslides, hailstorms, etc.
Fire and Explosion: Any damage resulting from fire, explosions, or self-ignition in the bus is covered. Buses might catch fire due to fuel leaks, electrical short circuits, or as a result of an accident.
Towing Damage Cover: Damage caused while the bus is in transit or being towed (for example, if your bus breaks down and gets damaged during towing) is covered. This ensures that even when you’re moving the bus after an incident, any further mishap is covered.
What is Not Covered?
Driving Without a Valid Licence: If at the time of an accident, the driver (or you) was operating the bus without a valid driving licence, any resultant claim will be rejected.
Driving Under the Influence: Drunk driving or under the influence of drugs voids insurance coverage. If the driver was intoxicated or impaired by substances when the incident occurred, we will not honour the claim.
Accidents Outside Geographical Limits: Every motor policy has a geographical area it covers (usually India for domestic policies). If your bus is involved in an accident outside the allowed region, the claim will not be admissible.
Consequential Losses: Any indirect or consequential damage that is not directly caused by an insured peril is excluded. For instance, if your bus is repaired after an accident but then remains idle and you lose business income, the lost revenue is a consequential loss, not covered by motor insurance.
Using the Bus for Illegal Purposes: Any loss or accident that happens while the bus is being used for unlawful activities (for example, smuggling goods or any criminal act) will not be covered.
Disclaimer: Please refer to the official policy documents for detailed inclusions and exclusions.

Key Takeaways
India’s transport backbone is growing, and so are the stakes. Commercial vehicle sales touched 9.68 lakh units in FY 2023-24, underscoring how essential buses and CVs are to everyday mobility and business. But more vehicles on the road also mean higher exposure to risk. For instance, Bihar recorded a higher number of road accidents in 2023 than in 2024. Even though this is just about one state, the fact remains that road accidents are still quite prevalent. This is a stark reminder that one incident can derail operations, finances and trust.
Even where safety is improving in pockets, the message is clear: protection matters. Government data shows fatalities on national highways have dipped marginally, from 53,372 in 2023 to 52,609 in 2024, yet the absolute numbers remain high. And bus-specific headlines continue to worry operators.
That’s exactly where IndusInd Bus Insurance fits in. A comprehensive policy cushions you against own-damage, third-party liabilities, theft, fire, and natural calamities. So, one mishap doesn’t become a balance-sheet crisis. Support matters just as much as cover. With 11,000+ cashless garages* and digital-first claim intimation/tracking, you can get back on the road faster without scrambling for funds.
If you run a bus, whether it’s a single coach or a 50-vehicle fleet, the smartest move you can make today is to lock in the right protection and keep it current. The market’s expanding, the roads are busy, and expectations are high. Choose IndusInd Bus Insurance, customise it with the add-ons you need and drive with confidence knowing that your passengers, people, and business are covered, mile after mile.

Why should I renew the Bus Insurance on time?
It is required to stay legal and maintain continuous protection. On-time renewal also helps you preserve NCB, avoid inspections after a lapse, and prevent claim denials during a gap.

There are usually three types: a comprehensive plan, a third-party plan and an own damage plan. IndusInd General Insurance offers a single commercial vehicle insurance plan that combines both third-party liability and own damage cover into one comprehensive package.
I have over ten college buses in my fleet. Can I insure them all?
Yes. One single policy can cover multiple buses, and we can onboard fleets together for simpler administration and uniform coverage terms.
Can I insure new accessories during the policy mid-term (GPS, cameras, etc.)?
Yes. Request an endorsement with accessory details/invoices. You may need to pay an additional premium, and your policy schedule will be updated.
What online payment modes are accepted during policy purchase and renewal?
Most credit/debit cards, netbanking, UPI, and popular wallet options are supported. You’ll receive instant confirmation and a downloadable e-policy in your email.
