Scooter Insurance
Scooter insurance is a type of insurance that covers repair or replacement costs if your scooter gets damaged in accidents, theft, or natural disasters. A comprehensive policy also offers compensation for damages or injuries caused by your scooter to another person or their property.
Without proper insurance, a single accident can cost you thousands in repairs costs. For example, if your scooty hits another car, damaging its bumper, the insurance policy will pay compensation to the car on your behalf. It will also pay for your scooter’s damage in this collision. Besides, driving an uninsured scooter is a punishable offence under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988.
IndusInd Scooter Insurance (formerly Reliance Scooter Insurance) offers comprehensive coverage at pocket-friendly premiums. You can also enjoy dedicated coverage with our smart add-ons like Pay-As-You-Drive, 24x7 Roadside Assistance, Zero Depreciation and more. Useful Insights on Scooter Insurance
As per IMARC Group, India’s two-wheeler market has already touched 24.9 Million Units in 2024 and is expected to reach 92 Million Units by 2030. This increased vehicle ownership, poor condition of roads and rising traffic congestion in urban areas make two-wheeler or scooter insurance necessary to prevent expensive repairs.
Again, over 8,000 challans were issued for traffic violations, including driving uninsured vehicles. Despite legal requirements and rising motor repair costs, 60% of two-wheeler vehicles in India remain uninsured.
This alarming gap is resulting in hefty out-of-pocket expenses for two-wheeler owners in the country. This is why smart scooter owners opt for comprehensive insurance to save on repair/replacement expenses that can reach thousands during accidents.
Benefits of IndusInd Scooter Insurance Policy
IndusInd Scooter Insurance offers reliable protection tailored to your riding needs. From legal compliance to financial security, here are the key benefits it provides:
Avoid Legal Penalties
The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 makes third-party insurance mandatory for all scooter owners. Without valid insurance, you may face up to ₹2,000- ₹4,000 in fines and/or 3 months imprisonment (repeat offense).
Covers Third-party Damages
Our third-party scooter insurance covers repair, medical, and legal expenses if your scooter causes harm to others. It comes bundled with our comprehensive plan or can be bought separately with an OD cover.
Covers Hefty Repair Costs
IndusInd Scooter Insurance covers repair or replacement costs if your scooter is damaged due to accidents, fire, theft, natural calamities or man-made events.
Long-Term Plan Options
We offer 5-year policy options* for new as well as old scooters. This means you can enjoy continuous coverage at affordable premiums without worrying about yearly policy renewals.
PA Cover for Owner-Driver
IndusInd Scooter Insurance offers up to ₹15 lakh* Personal Accident Cover for the owner-driver, supporting your family in case of accidental death or disability.
Cashless Repairs at Network Garages
With us, you enjoy cashless repairs with genuine parts at 11,000+ network garages* across India, minimising out-of-pocket costs while ensuring quality service from trusted professionals.
Types of Scooter Insurance Policies
Comprehensive Scooter Insurance
Definition: IndusInd Comprehensive Scooter Insurance (formerly Reliance Comprehensive Scooter Insurance) offers complete protection against damages to your scooter as well as damages caused to another person or their property. We combine third-party and own damage protection under one policy to offer all-around coverage. You also get additional coverage using our 10+ add-ons with 3 EV add-ons* for e-scooters.
Ideal For: This type of policy is perfect for anyone who uses their scooter on a daily basis and anyone looking for all-around protection. For example, if you heavily rely on your scooter every day to get to work or college, or if this is your first scooter, this plan is highly recommended.
Quick Tip: You can get up to 5 years of coverage and save on premiums. With our 5-year policy, you can pay once on policy purchase and get 5 years of continuous coverage without worrying about any yearly premium hikes.
Third-Party Scooter Insurance
Definition: Third-party scooter insurance is mandatory for all vehicle owners under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. It protects you from costs for damages or injuries caused by your scooter to someone else, their vehicle or property. Note that this plan does not cover any damages to your scooter. So, we recommend buying it with an own damage policy.
Ideal For: This type of policy is ideal for anyone looking for basic coverage. For example, if you are on a budget, have an older scooter, or you don't use your scooter often because you own multiple vehicles, third-party scooter insurance is recommended.
Quick Tip: This is our most affordable plan, and like comprehensive scooter insurance, we offer up to 5 years of coverage*. So if you're looking for a quick and affordable way to fulfil your legal obligations on a budget, look no further than our third-party scooter insurance.
Own Damage Scooter Insurance
Definition: IndusInd Own Damage (OD) Scooter Insurance covers accidental damage caused to your scooter. Whether it is a collision, fire, damage caused by natural events like floods or storms, or theft, this plan helps pay for the repair or replacement costs of your scooter. It is ideal if you already have a third-party plan and want to extend financial protection to your scooter.
Ideal For: An OD cover is ideal for scooty owners who want to enhance protection beyond basic third-party coverage. And since we offer flexible policy terms ranging from 1 month to 1 year*, you can customise exactly when you get this coverage.
For example, if you don't ride your scooter during the rainy season or if you travel frequently, you can get this cover for a few months instead of the whole year. This works out cheaper than buying a 1-year plan when you don't need long-term coverage. Similarly, if you do need long-term coverage, you can get the yearly plan.
Quick Tip: Since our OD scooter plans are a lot more flexible, we recommend getting this policy if you already have a third-party policy or if your scooter usage is inconsistent throughout the year. They're a more cost-effective solution for anyone looking to upgrade to own damage coverage without committing to a comprehensive policy. It's also a good opportunity to try out our services short term before upgrading to our comprehensive scooter plan.

Why Buy Scooter Insurance Online?
Things to Keep in Mind While Buying Scooter Insurance
Buying scooter insurance is about more than just getting basic coverage, it’s also about choosing the right protection for your riding needs. Here are a few key points to consider before you buy or renew your policy:
Opt for Essential Add-ons
A standard scooter insurance policy may not always be enough. Our 10+ add-ons* give your scooter dedicated coverage for things like engine damage or 24/7 roadside assistance in case your scooter breaks down.
Look for Available Discounts
Check for discounts when purchasing or renewing your scooter insurance. If buying online, look for online-only offers that can reduce your premium. You can use our 50% No Claim Bonus (NCB)* to lower your premiums at renewals.
Check Services & Benefits
You should verify if cashless repair services are available at garages near your location, as this can save you from paying upfront costs during repairs. Make sure the policy offers quick claim processing with easy documentation to avoid delays when you need assistance.
Understand Inclusions and Exclusions
Having to pay out of pocket after an accident can be stressful if your policy does not cover it. That’s why it is important to check what is included or excluded in your scooter insurance. Knowing this helps you avoid any surprises at the time of claims.
Insured Declared Value (IDV)
Your scooter’s IDV can’t be set too high or too low; rather, we recommend choosing an IDV that’s about the same as your scooter’s current market value. This ensures you have enough coverage without having your premiums be too high. That’s why, at IndusInd General Insurance, we offer a pre-set IDV range you can choose from during purchase based on your scooter’s make and model.
Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR)
The insurer’s claim settlement ratio is a good indicator of the chances of your scooter insurance claim being approved and settled by the insurance company. A higher ratio of over 95% is best. For instance, we have one of the highest claim settlement ratios in the industry. Plus, our seamless AI-assisted claims process via the Self-i app ensures your claims are simple, quick and seamless.
Network Garages
Network garages offer access to high-quality, quick, cashless repairs for your scooter. Therefore, we recommend going for an insurer with a wide network of garages in your region. For example, we offer a network of 11,000+ network garages* across India to ensure you get cashless repairs no matter where you live.
Easy Access & Customer Support
Easy access is essential to ensure a positive user experience for policyholders. Hence, we recommend choosing online insurers that offer fully digital processes. For instance, we offer 100% digital processes for purchases, renewals, claims and policy management/updates. We also offer 24/7 customer support pan-India.
How Much Does Scooter Insurance Cost?
Third-Party Scooter Insurance Premium
For Private Fuel-Based Scooters
For third-party scooter insurance policies, the premium is decided and declared by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) based on a scooter’s engine cubic capacity. The current scooty insurance third-party price list is as follows
Engine Cubic Capacity (CC) | Premium for 1 Year | Premium for 5 Years |
|---|---|---|
Less than 75 CC | ₹482 | ₹2,901 |

Between 150 CC and 350 CC | ₹1193 | ₹7,365 |
More than 350 CC | ₹2323 | ₹15,117 |
For Private Electric Scooters
For private electric scooters, the IRDAI prescribes discounted third-party premium rates based on the vehicle’s motor power (KW). These rates are uniform across insurers and differ depending on whether you choose a 1-year or 5-year policy.
| Features | Premium for 1 Year | Premium for 5 Years |
|---|---|---|
Less than 3 KW | ₹457 | ₹2,466 |
Between 3 KW and 7 KW | ₹607 | ₹3,273 |
Between 7 KW and 16 KW | ₹1,161 | ₹6,260 |
More than 16 KW | ₹2,383 | ₹12,849 |
Disclaimer: Third-party scooter insurance premiums are decided and set by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) every year and are subject to change. Always check the IRDAI's official Gazette publications to get up-to-date information on the current year's premium rates.

Scooter Insurance Terms You Need to Know About
Figuring out how scooter insurance works can get confusing. That's why we've explained the most common scooter insurance terms, so you know exactly what to ask for when you buy a scooter insurance policy at IndusInd General Insurance.
Premium
This is the amount you have to pay to maintain the coverage of your scooter insurance policy. It can be paid yearly/half-yearly/quarterly/monthly or all at once upon purchase.
Policy Period
It refers to the duration for which you receive scooter insurance coverage for your scooter. For example, we offer scooter insurance coverage up to 5 years*.
Third-Party Liability
Third-party liability coverage in scooter insurance protects you if your scooter accidentally causes injury or property damage to another person in an accident. This coverage is mandatory in India and helps pay for compensatory costs in your place if your scooter causes accidental damage/injury to another person or their property.
Own Damage Cover
An Own Damage Cover financially protects you if your scooter is damaged due to an accident, natural disasters or man-made events, such as riots and strikes. This cover helps pay for repairs or replacement of your own scooter. It also covers theft if your scooter is stolen and never recovered by paying your scooter’s IDV amount.
Insured Declared Value (IDV)
This is the current market value of your scooter. It’s also the maximum amount your insurance provider will pay you if your scooter is damaged beyond repair in an accident or is stolen and never recovered. At IndusInd General Insurance, we offer IDV customisation by allowing you to choose your IDV amount during purchase from a preset range based on your scooter’s make and model, so that you can choose the best one suited to you.
Deductible
This refers to a fixed amount you agree to pay before your scooter insurance plan begins to cover the remaining expenses. It comes in two types: compulsory and voluntary deductibles.
Compulsory Deductible
A compulsory deductible is set by IRDAI based on your scooter’s engine or battery capacity (cc or KW). This amount is mandatory and must be paid regardless of what scooter insurance policy you buy. Our scooter plans with OD coverage are subject to a mandatory deductible of ₹100*.
Voluntary Deductible
Voluntary deductible is an additional amount you opt to pay on top of your compulsory deductible. You can choose your voluntary deductible amount while buying or renewing your policy.
Voluntary deductibles in scooter insurance allow you to lower your premium. With us, you can opt for a voluntary deductible between ₹500 and ₹3,000, and reduce your own damage premium by 5% to 25%, subject to a maximum of ₹250*.
Personal Accident (PA) Cover
Personal Accident Cover in scooter insurance provides financial support to you and your family in case of partial/permanent disability or loss of life due to an accident. It offers a lump sum payout of up to ₹15 lakhs* for loss of limb(s), loss of eyesight, permanent total disablement and accidental death. According to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, this is also a mandatory cover in India.
For example, if you suffer permanent total disablement from an accident, your PA cover pays 100% of the insured amount. However, the total payout cannot exceed ₹15 lakh during any single policy period.
No Claim Bonus (NCB)
This is a discount offered for not filing any claims during the policy term/year. It can be used to reduce the premiums at the policy renewal.
We offer a renewal discount on own damage premiums starting at 20% on the first year, up to a maximum of 50%* for 5 consecutive claim-free years. To keep your NCB, you must renew your policy within 90 days of expiry; otherwise, your accumulated discount will lapse and cannot be transferred.
Add-Ons
These refer to the additional covers that can be purchased along with your scooter insurance policy to increase the coverage. You can also add or remove from your scooter policy during renewals.
Grace Period
It is the period during which you can renew your scooter insurance policy and restore the benefits after its expiry. The grace period under our plans is typically 90 days. Note that once the grace period is over, you cannot reinstate the policy. You will lose all the benefits as well.
Network Garage
Network garages refer to our empanelled auto-repair facilities, where you can take your insured scooter after an accident and get it repaired cashlessly by certified professionals. We settle your repair/replacement costs directly at your chosen network garage, so you don’t have to bear the hefty repair expenses.
We offer 11,000+ network garages* across India, which you can find using our garage locator tool or the Self-i app.
Cashless Claim Settlement
A cashless claim in scooter insurance is a convenient option for filing claims. With this option, you can get a direct settlement of your scooter repair expenses between the authorised garage and the insurer.
However, you must remember that this facility is only available to you if you choose a garage within the insurer’s network. With IndusInd General Insurance, you can get cashless settlement at any of our 11,000+ network garages*.
Depreciation
This refers to the decrease in value of your scooter and its parts due to wear & tear and time. When you raise a claim, your insurer will calculate the depreciated value of your scooter parts to be repaired/replaced and subtract that value from your total claim amount. So, you will have to pay the depreciated amount out of pocket.
Total Loss
If the insured scooter has been destroyed or has been rendered permanently incapable of use, it is declared a total loss claim. Your scooter is also considered a total loss if it is stolen and has not been recovered.
Constructive Total Loss
If your scooter repair costs exceed 75% of your scooter’s IDV, the insurance company will consider it a constructive total loss, as it may be more cost-effective to buy a new scooter than to repair the old one.
Disclaimer: Policy information and discount percentages are subject to change based on the age of the vehicle, vehicle make and model, and your chosen plan options. You can always contact us to ensure you have the most up-to-date information on your applicable discount percentages and policy features.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is scooter insurance mandatory for all scooters in India?
Yes, scooter insurance is mandatory for all scooters in India. Among all the plans, this mandate is limited to third-party insurance. However, given that this policy category does not protect your scooter/scooty, investing in comprehensive plans is recommended.
At IndusInd General Insurance, we offer third-party and comprehensive scooter insurance plans that offer up to 5 years of coverage*. Plus, we also offer up to an 80% discount*.
What are some of the benefits of buying scooter insurance from IndusInd General Insurance?
Buying scooter insurance from IndusInd General Insurance has multiple benefits, such as:
Quick claims, purchase and renewal via our website and the Self-i app
Convenience of cashless claims at 11,000+ network garages*
10+ add-ons with 3 EV add-ons for e-scooter protection
24/7 customer support with quick breakdown assistance
Do I need to pay a higher premium for add-ons?
Yes, add-ons are additional coverage options that increase your base policy protection. Thus, based on the number and types of add-ons you combine with your scooter insurance, the premium will increase.
Hence, we recommend getting add-ons that you’re sure you will need. Our most popular ones include Nil Depreciation Cover, Engine Protector, Consumables Expenses and Key Protect. If you have an e-scooter, we recommend getting our 3 EV-specific add-ons.
Can I customise my third-party scooter insurance?
No, third-party scooter insurance cannot be customised using any add-ons. This is because this policy type only covers third-party liabilities and only offers basic coverage. In terms of customisation, you can modify the policy tenure during purchase based on how long you require coverage.
If you want to enhance coverage, you can always upgrade your policy to a comprehensive scooter policy during renewal.
How to transfer scooter insurance when selling your scooter?
If you are selling your scooter, you must transfer the scooter insurance policy to the new owner within 14 days of the sale. Here are the steps to follow -
1. Inform Us - The first step is to notify us about the sale of your scooter and update us regarding the buyer's details and purchase date.
2. Submit Documents - Next, you need to submit the following documents to us for verification.
The original scooter insurance policy document.
Scooter registration certificate
Registration Certificate (RC)
Form 29/Form 30/Sale deed
Proof of address of the new owner
Proof of identity of the new owner
3. Payment - After verifying your documents, you need to pay the transfer charges to us as applicable as the final step.
4. Final Transfer - Once we receive the payment, we will initiate the transfer of your scooter insurance from you to the new buyer.
What can I do if my scooter insurance has expired?
If you’ve failed to renew your scooter insurance policy by the expiry date, the coverage becomes inactive. With us, you have a 90-day grace period to renew your policy and get that coverage reinstated.
Failure to renew within the grace period will lead to a lapse in your scooter insurance plan and will result in the loss of all your accumulated rewards and discounts. In this case, you will have to buy a new scooter insurance policy, so we strongly recommend that you renew your plan within the grace period.
