Switzerland Visa for Indians
Dreaming of Switzerland’s postcard-perfect landscapes and crystal-clear lakes? Make sure to plan ahead because, as an Indian passport holder, you will need a visa to explore this European paradise. Switzerland offers various types of visas, ensuring every traveller can choose the one that best fits their purpose of visit.
Switzerland is widely known for its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant locations. From the snow-capped Alps and serene lakes like Lake Lucerne and Lake Geneva to bustling cities like Zurich, Geneva and Interlaken, the country offers something for every kind of traveller.
The country's popularity is undeniable, with India ranking as a significant source market for tourism. According to the Research Report 2025 by Switzerland Tourism, India contributed over 6.5 lakh overnight stays in Switzerland in 2024, with a growth of 10.6% between 2023 and 2024. Be it adventure sports, luxury shopping or exploring serene lakeside towns, Switzerland consistently tops travel wish lists.
With endless sights to explore, preparing well is key to your Swiss journey. To help you plan your trip seamlessly, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about the Swiss visa.
Switzerland Visa: All You Need to Know
To enter Switzerland, a valid visa is mandatory for Indian travellers. As Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area, you can obtain a Schengen visa for short stays of up to 90 days. This visa is suitable for leisure travel, business trips, study programs or visiting family and friends. It also allows travel across other Schengen countries during the same period. You can apply for a Schengen visa through VFS Global, which handles document collection and processing on behalf of the Swiss authorities.
For visits lasting longer than 90 days, you must apply for a long-term national visa. This visa is issued for extended stays in Switzerland for purposes such as long-term study, employment or family reunification. Unlike the short-stay Schengen visa, the national visa requires approval from Swiss authorities before you can enter the country, and applicants are required to submit their application personally at the Embassy of Switzerland in New Delhi.
Switzerland Visa Insights
In 2024, Switzerland welcomed over 42.8 million overnight stays. Indian tourists contributed significantly, with the Zurich region alone accounting for 2,05,000 million overnight stays, making India the fifth-largest source market for the region. Switzerland was also one of the top Schengen visa issuers for Indians in 2024, granting over 1.9 lakh visas with an approval rate of nearly 88%.
Also, travel from India to Switzerland is well-supported by strong flight connectivity. The Swiss International Air Lines offers daily flights from Mumbai and Delhi to Zurich. Air India recently increased its direct flights from 4 times a week to 5 times a week between Delhi and Zurich, making it easier for Indians to plan trips and choose suitable travel dates.
