knowledge

IndusInd Personal Accident 360Shield (formerly known as Reliance Personal Accident 360Shield) is a comprehensive plan that provides protection against partial disability, permanent total disability, and accidental fatality. The sum insured options of this personal accident cover range from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 crore, and policy coverage begins from the day of purchase. Moreover, it offers additional benefits such as coverage for daily hospital costs, loss-of-income compensation and transportation expenses.

Plus, with customisation options via add-ons, you can get coverage for physiotherapy after hospitalisation and for medical equipment such as manual wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and canes. This accidental insurance policy is ideal for anyone working in high-risk jobs, living in areas prone to accidents, parents, frequent domestic and international travellers, and self-employed individuals.

Get our personal accident policy today to protect against life’s unexpected turns.

What Is Personal Accident Insurance?

A personal accident insurance policy offers financial support if the insured suffers an injury, disability, or fatality due to an accident. It covers events such as road accidents, slips, falls, and workplace mishaps. The policy pays a lump sum based on the type of injury or loss.
For example, if an accident causes permanent disability, the policyholder receives a pre-decided amount. This insurance helps manage sudden medical expenses and loss of income. It also provides support to the insured’s family in case of fatality. Unlike life insurance, it specifically covers accidents only.
IndusInd’s 360Shield Personal Accident Cover provides wide protection including accidental fatality, permanent total disability, and partial disability. The policy also covers hospitalisation expenses and offers add-on covers, such as child education benefits.
You can choose your coverage amount and customise the plan. Claims are processed quickly, and payouts help maintain financial stability after an accident.
Health insurance covers hospitalisation for illnesses or injuries, whether accidental or not. Personal accident insurance only covers accidents. Health insurance covers treatment costs, while personal accident insurance pays a lump sum for accidental injuries or severe fatality.

Why Do You Need a Personal Accident Insurance Cover in India?

In 2022, data from the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways revealed a grim figure: over 1.68 lakh people lost their lives in road accidents across India. Apart from these fatalities, many others sustained serious injuries, which led to long-term or permanent disabilities.

Plus, a 2024 report on the Economic Burden of Accidents and Injuries in India highlights that treatment at a private hospital costs nearly 5 times more than treatment at government facilities. This makes accident-related medical care financially overwhelming for many households.

These unpredictable events serve as a strong reminder of why it is important to have personal accident insurance. Such a policy can offer a much-needed financial safety net when life takes an unexpected and tragic turn.
A personal accident cover acts as a safety net when life takes an unexpected turn. If an accident results in a loss of life, your family receives a lump sum that can help them cover everyday expenses, manage household costs, and pay off any loans or dues.

If the injury causes temporary disability, the policy can provide a regular income during your recovery period. This helps ease the pressure of lost earnings and ensures your family’s needs continue to be met, whether that is rent, school fees, or grocery bills.

With personal accident insurance in India growing at 3.5% year-on-year, more individuals are recognising its importance. It is a dependable income-protection tool against sudden accidents.
Accidents do not just affect high-risk jobs or travellers. A fall at home, a two-wheeler skid, or an unexpected collision can disrupt your life.

Imagine a self-employed person unable to work for three months due to a leg fracture or a parent needing funds for hospitalisation after a roadside mishap. Given the rising cost of private medical treatment and the financial strain caused by loss of income, even a single accident can destabilise an otherwise secure household.

Without accident insurance, the loss of income and high medical bills can strain any household. In such situations, a personal accident policy offers much-needed financial relief.

Types of Personal Accident Insurance Policies

Personal accident insurance comes in various forms, each designed to match different lifestyles, risk profiles, and coverage needs. Options include individual personal accident insurance, a family personal accident cover, or a group personal accident policy through your employer.
These policies vary in terms of customisation, claims control, sum insured, and add-on flexibility. Understanding each option helps you make a wise and informed choice.

Individual Personal Accident Insurance Policy

This standalone cover protects you against accidental fatality, permanent or partial disability, and more. IndusInd Personal Accident 360Shield offers coverage starting from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 crore. It includes optional benefits such as hospital cash, fractures, and trauma care. With zero waiting period and flexible add-ons, it is ideal for professionals and self-employed individuals who prefer personal control over their insurance.

Group Personal Accident Insurance Cover

Employers typically offer a group personal accident policy to cover their workforce. It provides basic protection against accidental fatality or disability but usually comes with lower coverage limits and no personalisation. Coverage usually ends when you leave the organisation. It is wiser to combine it with an individual personal accident insurance plan for long-term financial protection.

Who Should Buy IndusInd Personal Accident 360Shield?

Professionals who travel daily for work face constant road and travel risks. A personal accident policy provides income protection and confidence in the event of an accident, injury, hospitalisation, or permanent disability.
These individuals often lack employer-provided coverage. A personal accident insurance policy protects their income and business continuity if an accident impacts their ability to work or manage day-to-day operations.
Primary caregivers may not earn a salary but still contribute significantly to the household. Accident coverage helps manage recovery costs and support services if they are unable to perform their daily responsibilities.
People in hazardous roles, such as construction workers, delivery personnel, and drivers, face greater risk. A personal accident policy provides essential financial security in the event of on-duty injuries or long-term disability.
Accidents during travel can derail financial plans. Those with EMIs or loans need accident insurance to ensure their liabilities are covered and that their dependents remain protected even in unforeseen situations.

How Much Personal Accident Insurance Cover Do You Need?

icon

Factors That Decide Your Sum Insured and Premium

icon

Age

Younger individuals often receive higher coverage at lower premiums than older individuals.
icon

Annual Income

Your income helps determine the sum insured; ideally, 5X to 10X your annual earnings.
icon

Occupation Type

High-risk jobs like driving, construction, or field work may require and attract higher cover.
icon

City of Residence

Urban residents may face higher risks due to dense traffic and urban lifestyles, which can impact both the sum insured and the premium.
icon

Lifestyle and Travel Habits

Frequent travellers or those engaged in activities like biking or trekking may need broader coverage.
icon

Family Dependants

If you support a family, you may need higher coverage to ensure their financial security after an accident.
icon

Customisation Level

Choosing only the features you need helps control unnecessary premium expenses.

icon

Ideal Sum Insured for Different Life Stages

icon

5 - 10X Your Annual Income

A good rule of thumb is to opt for 5 to 10 times your annual income. Younger individuals or single professionals may choose lower sums. But breadwinners, parents, or people with EMIs should opt for coverage of ₹50 lakh to ₹1 crore. Your stage of life and financial responsibilities should guide your sum insured.

Tax Treatment of Personal Accident Insurance Premium in India

Currently, personal accident insurance premiums are not eligible for tax deductions under Section 80C or 80D of the Income Tax Act. Unlike health insurance, which qualifies for deductions, accident-only covers do not generally offer any tax benefit.

Personal accident cover may, however, qualify for tax benefits only when purchased as a rider with a life insurance policy, subject to prevailing tax laws and conditions.

The policy is still important for financial protection, but buyers should know there is no direct tax saving linked to this premium.
Health insurance premiums are eligible for tax deductions under Section 80D; however, personal accident policies are not included in this section. If you buy it as a standalone cover, you cannot claim tax benefits.

The key difference lies in the policy type; health insurance covers illness, while accident insurance focuses only on accident-related risks.
Despite the lack of tax benefits, a personal accident policy is still essential. It offers lump sum payouts in case of accidental fatality or disability, financial help that your health or term policy may not provide.

If you have EMIs, dependents, or work in a risky job, this plan ensures income continuity. It is an investment in security, not just tax savings.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between partial and total disability?

Partial disability limits your ability to perform your job in some capacity. For example, this could be hearing loss, loss of a limb, loss of one eye, etc. – Injuries that don’t completely incapacitate you. Total disablement prevents you from doing any type of work. For example, this could be total body paralysis, coma, severe head injury that affects your cognitive abilities, or loss of two or more limbs. Put simply: With partial disablement, you will still be able to seek employment and work in some capacity. Total disability prevents you from seeking any type of work due to the complete physical impairment of your body. Insurance compensation for total disability is generally higher to account for the fact that the person is no longer able to work. At the same time, compensation for partial disability is slightly lower in comparison, since the person can still go back to work once they recover. Under the IndusInd Personal Accident policy, you're covered for both permanent partial and permanent total disability up to ₹25 Crores.

What does personal accident insurance cover?

Personal accident insurance is a type of insurance that provides compensation to you or your family in case you suffer from any injury, disability or loss of life due to an accident. It offers a payout amount (usually the sum insured) in case any of these events cause you to halt work or lead to a loss of life. The kind of disability from an accident could be either partial or total. For example, disablement could be loss of both eyes or one eye, loss of all limbs or any one limb, loss of hearing in one or both ears, etc.

How is personal accident insurance different from health insurance?

IndusInd Personal Accident insurance covers you for accident-related events that lead to hospitalisation. For example, this can be a road accident that leads to emergency hospitalisation. Health insurance covers you for a variety of other medical emergencies, including accident-related ones. For example, these can be your medical bills for when you fall sick and need to visit the hospital.

Will animal attacks, infection and murder be covered under the plan?

Yes, these more uncommon accidents are still covered under the IndusInd Personal Accident plan – Homicidal incidents can be considered as accidents, subject to no possibility of intentional loss of life (self-inflicted injury). Covered animal bites/attacks include snake bites, scorpion bites, and injuries from poisonous animals, reptiles, or insects. Disability arising from an injury-related infection (e.g., gangrene) after treatment is covered.

Can a customer renew their policy after PPD (Permanent Partial Disablement) or PTD (Permanent Total Disablement)?

After a Permanent Total Disablement (PTD) claim, you cannot renew the policy. For Permanent Partial Disablement (PPD), if the PPD claim results in a 50% disability rating, you cannot renew the policy. For reference, when your policy states “Specified Severity” coverage under PPD – 50% and above is considered “Specified Severity”.

If a case is declined for the proposer, can an individual policy be offered to only a non-earning family member?

No, non-earning members cannot take individual policies and can only be covered with an earning member. However, non-earning members are eligible for up to 50% of the earning member’s SI. For example, housewives can be covered if the proposer is an income holder. The housewife will receive 50% of the base salary increase.

Can a customer protect multiple loans from different banks?

Yes, provided the loans are taken within India from banks regulated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The maximum amount payable is limited to the policy’s base sum insured amount or the outstanding principal loan amount, whichever is lower. And the loan payment will be drawn in the name of the financier. In case you already have insurance for that loan, you cannot get the Loan Protector benefit. The Loan Protect option can also only be added at the time of renewal.

What is the maximum amount per month for EMI under the EMI Protector benefit?

The maximum limit is 2%*. For example, if the loan amount is ₹10,00,000, the maximum limit is 2% of ₹10,00,000, which is ₹20,000 per month. The insured will receive either ₹20,000 or the outstanding EMI amount, whichever is lower, for a maximum of 3 months.

What is the process for waiving the renewal premium if I’ve opted for the “Renewal Premium” cover?

The renewal notice will indicate whether a waiver is available. If you've opted for this cover and the waiver is not mentioned, please contact the customer support team.

What if the customer changes their occupation/risk class at the time of claim under the IndusInd Personal Accident 360Shield plan?

The customer should inform us about the change at the nearest renewal. For multi-year policies, the insured should inform us immediately so the adjustment can be made for the remaining period.

Can home visits be considered for Post-Hospitalisation Physiotherapy benefits?

Yes, home visits are allowed. Claims under this benefit are payable on a cashless basis via our network providers. If you’re opting for this service from a non-network hospital, you’ll need to pay a 20% co-pay*.

For the Repatriation of Mortal Remains, which address will be considered by IndusInd General Insurance?

Any address outside the insured’s city of residence will be considered for repatriation. The benefit covers transportation from the place of fatality to the burial or cremation ground, or the insured's residence. The costs for this service are part of the sum insured. In case of multi-member fatality, the lump-sum amount will be settled to the nominee or legal heir.
