Health Insurance Portability
As medical costs continue to climb, health insurance has become more of a necessity than a choice, with millions of Indians now opting for health insurance. This is also supported by the IRDAI’s Annual Report 2023-24, which states insurance companies collected more than ₹1 lakh crore as health insurance premiums, registering a growth of about 20.32% over the previous year.
But as people become more informed and selective, many policyholders realise that their current health insurance policy no longer fits their needs. Maybe the coverage feels limited, the premiums are too high, or the service is not up to their expectations. That is where health insurance portability comes in. This facility allows you to switch to a new insurer without losing the benefits you have already built up. It gives you the freedom to move to a policy that better suits your budget and expectations without starting over.
Whether your current policy does not match your evolving needs or you are dissatisfied with customer service, health insurance portability ensures that your health insurance journey remains uninterrupted and truly aligned with your life.
What is Health Insurance Portability?
Health insurance portability is a feature that allows you to switch from your existing health insurance policy to another insurer without losing the existing health insurance policy benefits you have accumulated, such as No Claim Bonus (NCB) and waiting period credits.
Previously, porting health insurance would result in losing out on the benefits accumulated, serving fresh waiting periods and forfeiting your No Claim Bonus. This discouraged many from moving to better plans, even when their current coverage no longer met their needs.
But with health insurance portability, introduced by the IRDAI, you can now carry forward your hard-earned policy perks even when switching to a different insurer. In short, it empowers you to make better insurance choices without any loss.

Benefits of Porting Health Insurance
Creating assets takes years of hard work, but one theft can leave you crippled financially. The Reliance Burglary and Housebreaking Insurance Policy keeps your property safe and gives you the peace of mind that you deserve.
Improved Coverage
Health insurance portability lets you upgrade your plan to one with better perks, such as enhanced financial protection, access to a wider network of hospitals or coverage for specific illnesses. This allows you to shift to a policy that keeps up with your current healthcare needs.
Continuity Benefits
Porting your health insurance allows you to carry forward the accumulated benefits, such as waiting period credits for pre-existing diseases and accrued NCB (a reward for claim-free years). This ensures that your transition to a new policy feels like a step forward, not a fresh start.
Better Customer Service
If you are dissatisfied with your current insurer’s service, portability gives you the option to switch to a provider with better customer service. It empowers you to choose an insurer that has a reputation for timely claim settlements and transparent practices, leading to a more positive experience.
Policy Customisation
Tired of one-size-fits-all coverage? Porting your health insurance gives you the chance to choose a policy that better suits your evolving requirements. Whether you want a higher sum insured, shorter waiting periods or specific disease coverage, switching insurers allows you to personalise your plan for more relevant and effective protection.

Rules for Porting Health Insurance
Understanding the rules for porting health insurance is crucial for a smooth switch between insurers. Here are the key conditions you need to know for a successful health insurance policy transfer -
Time Frame
You can only port your policy at the time of its renewal and the new insurer will provide coverage for the next policy term.
Policy Terms
Except for the waiting period credit, all other terms of the new policy, including the premium, are decided solely by the new insurance company.
Intimation
You must write to your current insurance company at least 45 days before your renewal date to request a policy transfer. The details of the new insurer must be mentioned in the portability request shared with the current insurer.
Renewal
You are required to ensure the continuous renewal of your policy. Note that a 30-day grace period is provided if the porting process is underway.

Things to Consider before Porting Health Insurance
While it is great that your employer provides health insurance, it may not be sufficient. Employee health insurance may have limitations such as lower sum insured or coverage that may not be adequate for your needs. Also, an employer health insurance covers you only during your job tenure.
Key Takeaways
Health insurance is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Over time, priorities shift and your policy should be able to adapt too. Health insurance portability makes this possible by allowing you to switch insurers without losing hard-earned benefits like waiting period credits or cumulative bonuses.
With 57 crore people covered under 2.68 crore policies in 2023–24, as reported by the IRDAI Annual Report 2023-24, the demand for flexible, user-first insurance is higher than ever. Portability ensures that your insurance keeps pace with your life, not the other way around.
At IndusInd General Insurance, we offer a wide range of health insurance policies designed to meet diverse needs. Whether you are looking to port your existing policy or start fresh with a new one, we are here to help you find a policy that not only protects you today but also adapts with your needs for tomorrow.
Our plans come with several standout benefits, including affordable premiums starting at just ₹243 per month*, coverage of up to ₹5 crores* and access to over 10,000 network hospitals*. Plus, with our easy-to-use IndusInd Self-i app, you can buy a policy in minutes and submit your claims instantly, all with just a few taps, anytime and anywhere.
So, why settle for less? Explore our health insurance plans today and make the move to health insurance that fits better, protects better and works better.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between migration and portability in health insurance?
Health insurance portability allows you to switch from one insurer to another while retaining accumulated policy benefits, such as waiting period credits and no claim bonus. Migration, on the other hand, enables you to move to a different policy within the same insurance company.
Can I convert individual health insurance to a family floater?
Yes, as per IRDAI, you can convert your individual health insurance policy to a family floater at the time of renewal.
Can we port group health insurance?
Group health insurance policies cannot be ported. However, you can migrate to an individual or family floater policy with the same insurer when leaving the group coverage, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy and the insurer’s approval.
Is an extra premium charged during the health insurance porting process?
No, extra premiums or additional charges are not applicable during the health policy portability process. You are only required to pay the premium for the new insurance policy.
How many times can I port my health insurance policy?
You can port your health insurance plan as many times as you feel necessary. However, it is applicable only at the time of policy renewal.
Can health insurance portability requests be rejected?
Yes, health insurance portability requests can be rejected by the new insurer after evaluation. While portability is a right, approval is not guaranteed and depends on the insurer’s assessment.
What are the common reasons for rejection of health insurance portability requests?
Portability requests may be rejected due to delays in document submission, incomplete or false information, outstanding premium payments or break-ins in policy renewal. Other reasons include underwriting risk, poor claim history and lapsed policies.
What can I do if my health insurance portability request gets rejected?
You can ask the insurer for the reason behind the rejection. Once you understand the reason, you can take corrective steps to resolve the issue and apply again.
For any further assistance regarding this matter, you can contact our customer support team.
What are the disadvantages of porting health insurance?
While health insurance portability offers flexibility, it comes with certain drawbacks. The new insurer may have different terms, such as longer waiting periods, higher premiums or reduced coverage.
Additionally, the process is only allowed at renewal and must meet strict timelines. It can also be complex and time-consuming.
Senior citizens may face a higher chance of rejection due to health risks. Also, you might lose loyalty benefits from your previous insurer, such as premium discounts, and the new policy may not offer equivalent add-ons or perks.
To avoid facing any of these cons, always make sure to check these factors before you start the porting process.
