Critical Illness Insurance – Get Lump Sum Protection Against Major Diseases

knowledge

IndusInd Critical Illness Insurance is a health plan that offers specialised coverage to help manage treatment costs for critical illnesses such as stroke, kidney failure, and cancer. It covers 10 critical illnesses, with lump-sum payouts ranging from ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh

For example, if your family has a history of heart disease and you’re at risk of developing it later in life, a critical illness policy will pay the full sum insured amount upon a diagnosis from your doctor for heart disease or surgery.

So, if you bought a ₹10 lakh critical illness policy, you will get the full ₹10 lakh on diagnosis. You can use this amount to pay for surgery costs, cardiac medication, hospital follow-up visits, and any other expenses.

The IndusInd Critical Illness Insurance (formerly Reliance Critical Illness Insurance) plan offers coverage to a single person with flexible policy durations of 1 and 3 years. With the IndusInd Insurance App, you get a streamlined claims process, meaning you get the lump sum payout right when you need it.

What is Critical Illness Insurance?

knowledge

Critical illness insurance is a form of health insurance that provides financial support when a serious, life-threatening illness is diagnosed. The policy pays a fixed lump-sum amount upon confirmation of a listed critical condition, regardless of the actual medical expenses incurred.

This payout is not restricted to hospital bills or treatment costs. The amount can be used for chemotherapy, long-term medication, recovery care, home modifications, or follow-up therapies. Many families also use the benefit to manage everyday financial responsibilities, such as EMIs, house rent, utility bills, and children’s education, during recovery.

Today, an organ transplant surgery, like a kidney transplant, can cost anywhere between ₹5 lakh and ₹15 lakh, depending on the severity.

With cancer rates on the rise, approximately 15 lakh cancer cases in 2024 alone, having specialised critical care insurance helps reduce financial stress by offering a one-time payout at diagnosis.

How to Choose the Right Sum Insured?

Choosing the right sum insured depends on personal risk, financial responsibilities, and how long your household would need support during recovery. These factors help guide a sensible decision.

criterio

Lifestyle and Health Habits

Daily stress levels, long working hours, smoking, sedentary routines, or irregular sleep patterns increase the risk of serious illnesses. Higher lifestyle risk usually calls for a higher sum insured to absorb longer treatment and recovery periods.

criterio

Income Stability and Existing Debts

Consider monthly income, home loans, personal loans, and ongoing EMIs. A critical illness can interrupt earnings for months. The sum insured should protect regular expenses without forcing asset liquidation or borrowing during treatment.

criterio

Family Medical History

A history of cancer, heart disease, or neurological conditions raises future risk. In such cases, choosing a higher cover provides a financial cushion if a diagnosis occurs earlier in life.

Simple Thumb Rules to Choose Critical Illness Sum Insured

  • Choose a sum insured equal to 3–5 times your annual income. A well-chosen sum insured supports recovery without financial pressure.

  • Alternatively, select an amount that covers 2–3 years of household expenses, including EMIs, education costs, and daily living expenses.

Premium & Example Scenarios - What Affects Your Critical Illness Premium?

The premium for your critical illness insurance depends on several personal and medical factors. Choosing the right sum insured early in life not only gives you better protection but also helps you lock in lower premiums for the long term.

  • Age: Premiums are lower for younger applicants, as the risk of illness increases with age.

  • Medical history: A history of health issues or past surgeries can lead to higher premiums or the need for medical tests.

  • Sum insured: The higher the coverage amount you choose, the more your premium will be.

  • Lifestyle habits: Smoking, alcohol use, and sedentary lifestyle habits can increase your risk profile and affect your premium.

  • Occupation: Jobs with high physical or health risks may lead to slightly higher premiums.

  • Existing conditions: Pre-existing health conditions may result in exclusions, loadings, or even policy denial.

Premium Illustration

Younger entry ages usually attract lower premiums, even at higher coverage levels. As age increases, premiums rise due to higher health risk, making early planning more cost-effective. Here is an illustration explaining how sum insured and age influence premium prices. You can also use the calculator below to get a realistic idea of your needs.

Things to Check When Filing a Claim

Here are a few important things to keep in mind to ensure a quick and easy claim settlement process. Knowing these policy clauses can help ensure you get the full claim amount on time upon diagnosis of a critical illness.

criterio

Policy Period

This is the timeframe during which the policy will be active. For example, our best critical illness insurance plan is available for 1 and 3 years, meaning your policy coverage can last up to 3 years (based on your chosen tenure) after which, you must renew your policy. You will also only be able to file claims during the policy period, not before or after it.

criterio

Policy Type

Who this policy covers is also an important factor to check for. Our critical illness insurance plan is an individual policy, meaning it will only cover one person. So, if you are listed as the policyholder, the policy will only cover your medical costs when you file a claim.

criterio

Check the Waiting and Survival Periods

  • 90 days initial waiting period.
  • 30-day survival period for illnesses covered under Category 1.
  • 60-day survival period for illnesses covered under category 2.
criterio

Know Your Responsibility As the Policyholder

  • Pay the policy premiums on time.
  • Avoid filing a false claim.
  • Declare your medical history honestly.
criterio

Maintain Continuity

It is important to renew your policy on time, or you will no longer be covered for your healthcare costs. Renew your policy within 30 days of the policy end date to maintain coverage.

criterio

Know the Deductibles

Understand the applicable co-pay and deductible amount. If applicable, you will have to pay it before your claim is settled. Simply put, you need to pay the deductible amount before we start covering any of your medical costs. Co-pay is the amount you need to pay for each claim before we cover the rest of the medical costs.

Common Reasons for Claim Rejection (and How to Avoid Them)

Understanding why claims get rejected can help you avoid common mistakes and ensure a smooth payout when you need it most. Here are some key reasons:

Hiding or failing to declare existing health conditions at the time of purchase may lead to claim rejection. Always be honest in your application.
Missing medical reports, ID proof, or claim forms can delay or deny claims. Double-check the documentation checklist before submitting.
Any false or misleading information, whether intentional or accidental, can void your policy. Fill out all details carefully and truthfully.
Claims require official medical records confirming diagnosis from a qualified specialist. Ensure proper paperwork is provided.
If the illness is diagnosed during the waiting period or the policyholder does not survive the required period after diagnosis, the claim won’t be paid.

Tip: Read the policy terms carefully and keep your insurer informed of any health changes.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is a better option - A health insurance critical illness add-on or a standalone policy?

A health insurance plan provides comprehensive coverage for a broad spectrum of medical expenses, whereas the best critical illness insurance plan offers specialised coverage for specific life-altering diseases. You can combine the critical illness add-on to your base policy for a slightly higher premium. When choosing between these two, you need to assess your risk of being diagnosed with a critical illness and your age. This will help you determine the level of coverage you need, which is limited to the one available under an add-on or a standalone policy. In some cases, having both a health insurance plan and a critical illness plan is a good investment. This is because, while you receive financial assistance for all medical expenses under a health insurance plan, you also have a financial safety net that provides a lump-sum payment for critical illnesses.

Why would I need support for lost income from critical illness insurance?

When you are diagnosed with a critical illness, your ability to work and earn your monthly income reduces significantly. In such situations, you and your family members might have limited or no financial resources to cover daily expenses. Thus, when you buy a critical illness insurance policy, you get financial compensation from us via a lump sum payout to support your family’s needs and cover the lost income.

What is the difference between a waiting period and a survival period?

The waiting period is the time during which you cannot file claims or get coverage for specific treatments or illnesses under your policy. For example, the IndusInd critical illness policy has an initial 90-day waiting period, meaning you can only file claims 90 days after your policy start date. A survival period is the time the policyholder must survive after being diagnosed with a critical illness before the insurance company pays the sum insured amount. For example, the IndusInd critical illness policy has a 30-day survival period for bone marrow transplants. So, you will only receive the insurance payout after surviving 30 days from the date of diagnosis.

What critical illnesses does this policy cover?

List of diseases under Category 1 (30-day survival period) - Cancer of specified severity Major Organ/ Bone Marrow Transplant Multiple Sclerosis with Persisting Symptoms Third Degree Burns Aorta Graft Surgery List of diseases under Category 2 (60-day survival period) - Open Heart Replacement or Repair of Heart Valves Coma of Specified Severity Quadriplegia (Permanent Paralysis of all four limbs) Total Blindness Kidney Failure Requiring Regular Dialysis

Is a medical test mandatory for everyone? Where can the tests be conducted?

A medical test is mandatory only for Individuals above 45 years. The medical tests will be done at a designated diagnostic centre and will be as follows: Complete Blood Count Fasting Blood Sugar ESR Serum Creatinine SGPT Urine Routine ECG Medical Examination Report with BP recordings – By a physician Based on your medical history, you may be requested to undergo other tests. We will also reimburse 50% of the cost of these medical tests conducted at the company's designated centre.

How do I determine the amount of critical illness coverage I need?

To choose how much critical illness coverage you need, you must assess the following factors thoroughly - Your lifestyle habits. E.g., leading a high-stress lifestyle or excessive drinking and smoking may put you at risk of developing critical illnesses or chronic health conditions later in life. Understanding your income, debts, and financial situation will help you choose the right sum insured for your coverage. Your family medical history; as it increases your chances of developing certain diseases. Based on this, you may need higher coverage.

Can the nominee be changed in the mid-term of the policy?

You can change the nominee for your critical health insurance at any time during the term. To change the nominee, all you need to do is give the details of your changed nominee to the company. To do so, please contact customer support. H3: Can the Sum Insured be changed mid-term? No, the sum insured cannot be changed during the policy tenure.

What are the factors that can affect your premium?

Your critical illness insurance premium is calculated based on your age, medical history and sum insured amount. There is also a direct correlation between the sum insured and premiums. Depending on the sum insured you choose, your cost of critical illness insurance can vary. A higher sum insured leads to a higher premium and a higher payout. Hence, for more severe critical illnesses, we recommend opting for a higher SI.

What happens to the premium if no claims are made against the policy?

If you have not made any claims against your policy during the year, IndusInd General Insurance (formerly, Reliance General Insurance) offers you the following discounts: 5% discount for one claim-free year* 10% cumulative discount for every claim-free year* Up to 50% discount for a break-free 3-year policy term*

Is there a limit on the number of claims that one can make in a policy period?

Yes, only a one-time lump sum settlement is available under this policy.

What are some reasons for claim rejections?

Some of the common reasons for claim rejections include - Pre-existing critical illness claim request Incomplete or inaccurate supporting documents for the claim Incorrect information on the claim form Limited proof of illness diagnosis, etc.
