Passport Office in Chandigarh

knowledge

Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab and Haryana, is a Tier II city and the “Wealthiest Town in India.” The union territory serves as a significant educational and administrative hub and is home to renowned educational institutions such as Panjab University and Chandigarh University.

In 2024, Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi and Haryana had the highest number of passport applicants, accounting for 14%-18% of the total passport applications in India. This increase was due to the large number of students going abroad for higher education and tourists travelling to popular destinations.

To manage this increased volume of applications, Chandigarh has a streamlined process for passport applications, making international travel more accessible. Whether you need a new passport or a renewal, understanding the process and knowing the locations of passport offices in Chandigarh ensures a smooth application experience. In Chandigarh, passport services are managed by the Regional Passport Office (RPO) and Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs), which offer both online and offline services.

Passport Office Types

Regional Passport Office (RPO)

The Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Chandigarh is the main administrative hub that manages all passport-related services. Along with the Union Territory of Chandigarh, RPO Chandigarh covers 12 districts of Punjab and Haryana, each, ensuring access to passport services. The RPO also acts as a crucial link between applicants and the Ministry of External Affairs.

Passport Seva Kendra (PSK)

The Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) is the primary passport office in Chandigarh. This is where all the front-end services related to passport issuance and immigration are managed. They act as the first point of contact for passport applicants in Chandigarh. Currently, there is one PSK office in Chandigarh that offers passport and passport-related services.

Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK)

POPSKs are established with the aid of India Post. They act as an extension of PSKs, operating from post offices to provide access to passport-related services in remote locations of Chandigarh where PSKs are not available, cutting down the need to travel long distances. As of now, there are 12 POPSKs in Chandigarh.

FAQs About Passport Office in Chandigarh

Why do you need PSKs and why POPSKs?

Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs) are front-end processing centres where you can apply for and renew your passport by submitting an application form, your biometric data, and other relevant documents. They serve as your first point of contact for obtaining an Indian passport or accessing related services like immigration.

PSKs and POPSKs serve the same purpose; the main difference is accessibility. While PSKs can be found in almost every city, POPSKs were launched to improve passport service accessibility in rural and semi-urban areas where PSKs aren’t available. They are usually located within India Post offices.

What are the new passport rules?

According to the recent updates, if you were born before October 1, 2023, you can attach a birth certificate, school leaving certificate, PAN card, pension order or driving licence as your age proof. However, for individuals born after October 1, 2023, a birth certificate is the only valid document for proof of age.

How many days does it take to get a normal passport in Chandigarh?

Generally, you can get a passport in Chandigarh within 30 days from the date of submission of your application form with supporting documents. However, it can vary based on individual circumstances.

Can I get a Tatkal passport in 1 day in Chandigarh?

It is possible, but not always guaranteed, as it will depend on the number of applications the passport office has received and is able to process. Once you’ve submitted your application and the status is ‘Granted’, you can have your passport dispatched on the third working day. The processing time begins the day after submission and does not include the police verification report, as it has a separate processing time that can vary.

What documents are required for a passport application in Chandigarh?

The general documents you’ll need to submit are –

  • Birth Certificate/School Certificates (10th and 12th mark sheets)

  • PAN Card/Voter ID

  • Aadhaar Card/Driving Licence/Electricity Bill/Ration Card

  • Two recent coloured photographs (size 4.5 x 3.5 cm)

  • Bank passbook/Statements and ITR forms

  • Your old passport (for renewals)

What should I do if I have received a passport with incorrect details?

If you have received a passport with incorrect details, you can report the same at the Regional Passport Office in Chandigarh. If your request is validated, they will process the issue of a new passport.

Ensure you provide accurate information at the time of application to avoid unnecessary errors and delays in re-issuance later.

What are some of the tips for a successful passport application in Chandigarh?

  • Ensure you provide accurate information that is consistent with your documents.
  • Apply well in advance to avoid last-minute hassles during the visa process.

  • Utilise the Passport Seva portal to stay updated with the latest processes and fee structure.

  • Go through the instructions carefully before applying.

  • Self-attestation is not allowed. Get documents attested by a Gazetted Officer.

  • Photographs are not needed while applying through PSK or POPSK. It is only required for applications made through DPC/SPC/CSC of size: 4.5 cm length x 3.5 cm width.

What do I do if I lose my passport?

If you’ve lost your passport due to theft or misplacement in India, you can reapply for a fresh passport at your nearest passport office in Chandigarh. In case you’ve lost your passport while overseas, you can still reapply for a new or replacement passport at the Indian Embassy or the closest Indian consulate.

Additionally, since passport replacement can be costly overseas, you can file a claim under your IndusInd travel insurance for passport loss. We cover up to $300* for passport loss overseas and will cover the reissue and replacement costs as well.

Please Note: For passport loss claims, we will require you to report the loss to the local police overseas and provide a copy of the FIR or police report during the claims process. You will need to report the loss within 24 hours of you knowing that your passport has gone missing.
