Travel Insurance

What is Travel Insurance?
A travel insurance policy provides financial protection against various trip-related emergencies that may occur during your trip. These can be events like medical emergencies, delayed flights, lost baggage and trip cancellations.

Why do you need Travel Insurance?
Travelling to a new country is exciting, whether you're planning a European holiday, heading to the UAE for business or exploring Southeast Asia’s beaches. But even well-planned trips can face occasional hiccups. This is where travel insurance comes in.
For instance, in 2024, 1 in 4 travellers stated airlines had either lost, delayed or damaged their luggage and offered no compensation.

How IndusInd Travel Insurance helps
That’s why having IndusInd Travel Insurance (formerly Reliance Travel Insurance) can be a game-changer. We help cover trip emergencies like luggage loss & delays, flight cancellations, medical emergencies and more, by offering compensation for any financial loss. So, if your airline delays your luggage, you get a payout to buy essentials.

Visa-Compliant Travel Insurance with Global Assistance

knowledge

Many countries, such as France, Germany, and Canada, mandate travel insurance as part of their visa processes; hence, it's essential to obtain travel insurance that is visa-compliant.

With IndusInd Travel Insurance, you get high coverage, visa-compliant plans with sum insured options ranging from $100,000 to $500,000. We also offer quick cashless claims at any hospital overseas and 24/7 worldwide customer support through Europ Assistance. From take-off to touchdown, we’ve got your back!

The Importance of Travel Insurance

knowledge

If something goes wrong during your travel – you get sick, lose things, miss a flight, or face any other emergency – travel insurance steps in to help pay for the resulting costs of these emergencies. Without travel insurance, all these costs would come straight out of your pocket. Therefore, we highly recommend everyone - from students travelling overseas for higher education, vacationers, solo travellers, to business travellers – to have a travel insurance policy when travelling.

And before you think of it as an extra expense, think of it like this – paying for travel insurance will only make up a small portion of your entire trip cost. Plus, emergency medical treatment can cost lakhs overseas, while an international travel insurance policy would cost a fraction of that and would also be able to pay for your medical bills.

You can easily buy travel insurance online from our website and quickly file claims on your phone via our IndusInd Insurance App.

Why Do You Need Travel Insurance When Travelling Abroad?

criterio

Covers Trip Delays, Missed Connections & Extensions

Long international itineraries with multiple connections can be easily disrupted with one delayed flight. For example, let’s say you’re flying from Delhi to New York but have layovers in Dubai and London. A single flight delay at any one of these locations can lead to you missing your next flight, turning your layover into an extended stay. This can also result in additional costs for lodging and rebooking.

Luckily, an advantage of having travel insurance is that both these expenses will be covered. IndusInd travel insurance has you covered for both flight delays (we pay $60 per day for up to 6 days) and missed connections (we pay up to $500), with automatic plan extensions of up to 30 days in case of emergencies. We ensure these costs are taken care of so you are not left paying for them.

Overseas Medical Treatment Can Cost Lakhs

An overseas trip is a great way to unwind and tick new experiences off your bucket list. However, an untimely medical emergency like sudden sea-sickness while you're island hopping or if the exotic cuisine doesn't agree with you can quickly derail your trip itinerary. The last thing you want to do is spend all your trip funds on medical expenses.

Moreover, most countries we visit, such as the UAE, USA, UK, Canada, and Australia, have significantly higher healthcare costs, with even a short hospital stay costing lakhs. And Indian health insurance rarely covers medical emergencies abroad. So, having a travel insurance plan can be a lifesaver in these situations.

At IndusInd General Insurance, we offer travel protection of up to $500,000 for doctor visits, hospitalisations, dental treatment, emergency evacuations and more to beat the expensive healthcare costs abroad.

Financial Safety Net for All Travellers

Anyone travelling overseas or domestically can insure their trip with travel insurance. It acts as a catch-all for any type of travel emergency, regardless of your reason for travel. For example,

Vacationers: Solo or family vacations and weekend getaways are often prepaid (flight tickets, hotel rooms, tours, etc), with these expenses being non-refundable. Plus, any delays wipe out carefully planned itineraries and cost a small fortune. A travel policy ensures you don’t lose months of savings to a trip emergency.

Senior Citizens: Older travellers need to contend with longer recovery times, pre-existing conditions, and a higher risk of medical emergencies while overseas. Plus, health scares overseas can turn into financial crises for retirees and their families. Here, travel insurance can be a financial shield.

Business Professionals: Work trips and frequent flights often come with tight schedules, expensive last-minute bookings, and you taking high-value belongings like laptops or documents. Even a single trip emergency can derail your whole trip, so it’s always best to insure these trips.

Students Travelling Overseas: As a student, you may be required by our university overseas to have travel medical insurance. Plus, you may have a tighter budget and limited local financial support, since most government services are only available for free to citizens and permanent residents. So, a travel insurance policy is often essential.

Moreover, all claims and assistance requests can be initiated digitally via the IndusInd Insurance app.

Helps Cover Lost Passports & Baggage

The best part of visiting new countries is shopping and visiting the most popular tourist spots. But if you accidentally lose your passport while trekking through Nepal’s mountain trails, exploring the bustling streets of Bangkok, or while island hopping in Greece, travel insurance can help you.

We offer international travel protection, where you can immediately contact us using the IndusInd Insurance app. We cover passport loss up to $300*. We also help you find or put you in contact with the nearest consular office to help you get a replacement quickly, so your adventure doesn’t come to a halt.

Similarly, imagine arriving at your dream destination only to find that your checked-in bags are delayed or lost due to an airline mishap. Emergencies abroad can be harder to manage alone. That’s why we cover the loss or delay of checked-in baggage. You get a payout of $100 for delays that exceed 12 hours and up to $1,500 in case the airline loses your bags completely. With this, you can replace essentials like clothes or toiletries, so you can still continue your trip while your luggage catches up with you.

Mandatory Travel Insurance for Visa

Most countries require you to buy travel insurance as part of their visa requirements. In fact, over 40 countries require travellers to carry travel insurance, with the vast majority requiring coverage that includes medical care, i.e., “travel medical insurance”.

For example, all 29 Schengen area countries – like France, Italy, Germany, etc. require everyone to have travel insurance with medical coverage as part of their visa processes. So, travel insurance isn’t just an additional “nice to have”; it’s an essential part of travel planning, as it serves as visa-compliant documentation.

Plus, if you’re worried about visa rejections and lost expenses, don’t worry, you’re fully covered. As an added benefit, we offer a 100% refund of premiums paid* toward your IndusInd travel insurance plan in case of a visa rejection.

criterio

Get Refunds for Trip Cancellations & Interruptions

Booking your flights and hotels in advance helps you save money and plan better. But if your trip gets cancelled due to rough weather, airline issues, or health emergencies, our travel insurance is there to help. We cover non-refundable expenses like pre-booked events, hotel stays, and flight tickets up to $600, so your money isn't lost. In fact, claims related to missed connections and airline delays accounted for 25% of total travel claims in 2024, highlighting how common these issues are.

We also cover trip interruption, i.e., you need to cut your trip short. This can be useful if you’re travelling under a tour package, or if you’re a student on a study visa and your semester gets interrupted. In this case, our student travel insurance offers a study interruption cover up to $10,000.

criterio

Will Offer Legal Assistance for Personal Liability

Let’s say your child accidentally breaks an expensive antique while you’re out shopping in Dubai, or you bump into a street vendor in Hanoi on your rented scooter. While these incidents are rare, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared and that’s one of the key benefits of travel insurance. In fact, we cover personal liability costs up to $250,000. This can be especially helpful since incidents like these can lead to you having to pay hefty compensation costs.

Factors Affecting Travel Insurance Premium

While our travel insurance plans offer affordable premiums, there are several factors that may impact the final premium price payable for your policy. Below are some of the key factors we consider:

Your policy type will determine the overall price. For example, plans with specialised coverage like senior citizen travel insurance would cost more than standard travel insurance plans. Similarly, multi-trip plans will be more expensive since they cover multiple trips taken within a year. While it may cost more in the beginning, they can help you save more in the long term since it’ll be less expensive than buying a new plan every time you need to travel.
Higher coverage limits for events like medical expenses, personal liability, flight cancellations, etc., can increase your premiums. In other words, if you’ve chosen a plan option with higher coverage limits, you will need to pay slightly higher premiums. For example, our maximum coverage plan option will cost more than the popular/standard plan option.

But this isn’t always a bad thing. Destinations like the US, UK, Canada or Europe will require higher coverage since the cost of living in those countries will be higher. So, naturally, it will cost more to cover trip emergencies in these countries compared to budget travel destinations like Sri Lanka or Vietnam, which don’t require such high coverage limits.
The total number of travellers covered impacts the premium costs. So, more travellers = higher premium. For example, family travel insurance would cost more than individual plans since they cover more people. This is because a larger group of people being insured means a higher probability of claims.

Premiums for these types of plans are also higher, as plans that cover multiple people typically have a higher sum insured and coverage limits to accommodate everyone insured under the policy.
Longer trips generally result in higher premiums due to the extended risk period. For example, a travel insurance plan covering a 5-day trip to Singapore will cost less than a travel plan covering a 15-day trip to Singapore.
Countries with a higher cost of living or higher healthcare costs will require travel insurance plans with higher sum insured and coverage limits. This is mainly due to the fact that currency conversion rates are often higher. So, without travel insurance coverage, you could be looking at higher out-of-pocket costs.

For example, countries like the USA, UK, Japan, China, South Korea, Singapore, Canada, etc., will all require higher coverage travel insurance plans.
Insurance companies take many factors into account when calculating your premiums. Of these, your sum insured, destination, and the number of people you insure play the biggest roles in determining your final premium. In simple terms, higher coverage = higher premiums.

So, naturally, prices will vary accordingly to ensure you have enough coverage while abroad.
While trip emergencies are rare and a cheaper plan sounds appealing, they often come with caveats – lower coverage limits, complex & slow claims, and limited access to services overseas.

During emergencies, these can cause even more stress, as you won’t have the time or the faculties to follow through tedious claims processes and unsatisfactory customer service.

That’s why it’s better to buy from reputed insurers, who have a proven track record of settling overseas claims quickly. For instance, you can quickly file a claim by tapping “InstaClaim” on the IndusInd Insurance app.

GST on Travel Insurance Premium

As of 22nd September 2025, travel insurance policies will no longer have an 18% GST added to their price. This means you can easily get a travel insurance policy with lower premiums without compromising coverage.
Premiums here refer to the fee you pay when you buy a travel insurance policy. On top of this fee, an additional 18% was added, which meant you would pay 18% extra for a policy in addition to the policy's actual price. Now that this 18% GST on travel insurance premiums has been reduced to 0%, you get travel insurance at a lower price.
To get an in-depth understanding of how the new GST exemption will affect your policy premiums, you can read our blog on 0% GST on Travel Insurance in India.

How Do I Choose the Right Travel Insurance Plan for My Trip?

criterio

Policy Type

The type of policy you’ll need will depend on your age. For example, senior citizens (over 61 years) would need a specialised senior citizen plan, since they require higher medical cover. A family of 4 or more going on vacation would benefit from a family travel insurance plan, rather than buying a separate plan for each family member.

And if you travel a lot for work or take frequent trips overseas throughout the year, buying an annual multi-trip travel plan would make sense, as it would be more cost-effective than buying a new plan for each trip.

criterio

Medical Coverage Limits & PED cover

Ensure the policy provides enough coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellations and other potential travel risks you may face based on the destination you’re travelling to. For example, if you’re visiting the US, getting a travel insurance policy with a high medical cover would be ideal.

It’s also best to check if pre-existing diseases are covered, and how your travel insurance policy covers pre-existing conditions if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or any other chronic illness.

At IndusInd General Insurance, we offer sum insured options for medical coverage starting from $100,000 all the way up to $500,000.

We also offer coverage over and above this amount for trip emergencies like flight cancellations, baggage delays and loss, 24/7 emergency cash, and more for extensive protection.

criterio

Consider Trip Duration and Destination Rules

The length and location of your trip, along with any layovers/transits, can impact your insurance needs. For instance, if you have a 2-week trip planned for Canada, your travel insurance requirements would be different compared to a student who’s planning to attend university there for a year, since they’ll require coverage for an extended period of time.

Similarly, the country you’re travelling to will also need to be taken into account. If you’re travelling to a budget-friendly destination like Vietnam, our popular/base coverage would suffice. For destinations like Dubai (UAE), Australia, the UK, the USA or Europe, our maximum coverage option would be ideal.

You also need to check if your travel insurance plan offers extensions in case you need to extend your trip due to an emergency. At IndusInd General Insurance, our plans offer 7-day extensions for flight delays and 30-day extensions for medical emergencies*.

criterio

Visa-Specific Requirements & Student Visa Requirements

Your travel insurance plan needs to be visa-compliant. This is because countries like the UAE, Turkey, and the 29 Schengen Area countries (e.g., France, Italy, Spain, Germany, etc) all require you to buy travel insurance as part of their visa process.

Meanwhile, countries like the US and Nepal mandate travel insurance for specific travel purposes – the US for student visas and Nepal for trekking or mountaineering. So if you’re travelling for a specific purpose like higher education, check the insurance requirements for your specific visa type.

At IndusInd General Insurance, we offer travel insurance plans that are visa-compliant and fulfill the minimum Schengen medical coverage requirement of €30,000 (while choosing a higher sum insured is recommended for optimum coverage). We also offer a 100% refund* on premiums paid towards your travel insurance policy in case of a visa rejection for any reason.

criterio

Check for Credentials

The insurance company you choose needs to be approved by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) and must be listed as a general insurer on the IRDAI website. For example, you will find IndusInd General Insurance (formerly known as Reliance General Insurance) listed on their website. Avoid buying travel insurance from unlisted insurance companies.

criterio

Read the Fine Print: Policy Exclusions & Deductibles

Carefully read through the policy exclusions to understand what is not covered. This will help you avoid surprises when filing a claim. We provide clear and transparent policy terms to ensure you are fully aware of what is and isn’t covered. You can check them here.

Also, check the deductible amount under each cover. Not every cover will have one, but it’s best to check for them so you’re not caught off guard during claims. This is the amount you’ll need to pay out of pocket when you raise a claim, while your insurance company pays for the rest. For example, we have a $50 deductible for medical claims. Once this is paid, we’ll cover the rest of your medical bills.

Common Travel Insurance Myths

criterio

I am healthy and disease-free. I don’t need travel insurance!

Fact: Travel insurance is not only for health-related emergencies. It protects you from all kinds of unforeseen events. Get coverage for trip delays, baggage loss, passport loss, etc., that may arise on your trip.

criterio

Travel insurance is only necessary for frequent travellers.

Fact: Whether you are a frequent traveller or looking forward to a single trip, travel insurance is important for all types of travel. Travel-related emergencies can happen even if you take one vacation in a year.

criterio

I only need to buy travel insurance if it is mandatory.

Fact: Travel insurance is strongly advised, even if it's not compulsory for your destination. It covers medical emergencies, flight cancellations, trip delays, etc., to ensure your finances are covered in case of trip emergencies.

criterio

Travel insurance is expensive!!

Fact: Compared to your overall trip costs, travel insurance is a relatively minor expense. For example, our plans start at just ₹306*. And when you take into account the amount of coverage you get, you’ll find that it’s a great investment and offers good value for money.

criterio

Senior Citizen Plans Need Medical Check-ups?

Fact: This isn’t true. Our travel insurance plans do not require any medical check-ups before purchase, and we offer coverage up to 90 years of age*. All you need are your KYC card details, contact information, passport number and trip dates to buy a travel insurance plan from our website.

criterio

I only need a travel plan when taking part in risky activities.

Fact: This is only partially true. On top of basic trip coverage, travel insurance plans will also cover other events like personal accidents, trip delays, missed flights, personal liabilities, loss of belongings, and more. In other words, you get all-around coverage during your trip for any type of emergency you face.

criterio

My credit card insurance is enough.

Fact: While credit cards do offer travel insurance, you can only claim coverage with the travel insurance company your bank is tied up with, not the bank itself. So if there are any issues during the claims process, the bank will not be held responsible. The coverage is also only available if your card is valid, you’ve used it within a specific number of days of the event, and the card does not have any outstanding payments. So, it’s best to get a separate travel insurance plan, as it offers similar benefits and more accessible services.

criterio

I only need travel insurance for expensive trips

Fact: While you should definitely insure your more expensive trips, we still recommend insuring your shorter, less expensive trips. This is because sudden emergencies, such as accidents, illnesses, luggage loss, passport loss, or flight cancellations, can be costly when you pay out of pocket. That one small incident can cost more than the trip itself. A travel insurance plan can quickly handle the costs while you smooth out the other details. It can even offer further assistance, like directing you to the nearest embassy for emergencies like passport loss.

criterio

I don’t need insurance for short trips

Fact: Your shorter trips aren’t completely risk-free, and most travel problems often happen suddenly – and often on short “routine trips” or trips taken for specific purposes where you least expect trouble – like a wedding, a visa appointment, a conference, family functions, etc. Shorter trips are also often fully prepaid and tightly scheduled, so they have less of a buffer. You don’t get much time or flexibility to handle your emergencies better. Plus, everything can feel more urgent and stressful, so even smaller issues can cost a lot. Hence, travel insurance can serve as a financial and decision-making buffer.
