Student Travel Insurance for Studying Abroad

knowledge

Student travel insurance is a special insurance plan made for students going overseas for education. It works like regular travel insurance but is designed to keep students' unique needs in mind. When you're studying in a foreign country, unexpected situations can happen - sudden illness, accidents, lost baggage or even emergency trips back home. This insurance covers all these situations, giving you and your family peace while you focus on your education.

The best part is that student travel insurance offers much more than just medical coverage. It protects your laptop and belongings, covers your tuition fees if you have to interrupt your studies due to medical emergencies, and even helps if something happens to your sponsor back home. With coverage going up to $500,000* for medical expenses and premiums being just 1-1.5% of your course fee, it's an affordable safety net that most universities abroad also require during admission.

You can buy your student plan online on our website. IndusInd student travel insurance (formerly Reliance student travel insurance) plans also offer medical financial protection for up to $500,000*, so you can focus on your studies and not stress over sudden inconveniences.

Why Students Need Travel Insurance When Studying Abroad?

High Medical Costs

Medical treatment abroad is extremely expensive compared to India. Healthcare costs are a huge concern for international students studying in the US, with 58% reporting that they were worried about their ability to pay for medical expenses. Student travel insurance covers your hospital bills, doctor visits and emergency treatments.

Campus Emergencies and Accidents

Accidents can occur anywhere - on campus, during sports or while commuting. This insurance protects you financially if you need immediate medical attention or have to take a break from your studies due to injuries.

Lost Documents and Belongings

Losing your passport, laptop or checked baggage can disrupt your studies completely. When you need to replace these important things, student travel insurance will pay for them, so you can get back to your normal schedule without having to worry about money or being late.

University Requirements

Most foreign universities and colleges make travel insurance mandatory for admission and visa processing. Having proper overseas student travel insurance isn't just smart - it's often a compulsory requirement you must fulfil before starting your course.

Who Should Buy Student Travel Insurance?

My Employer is taking care of my Health Insurance and so I do not need one

Students Travelling for UG/PG

If you are going abroad for undergraduate or postgraduate courses, International student travel insurance is essential. It covers medical emergencies, protects your belongings and meets university requirements for admission and visa processing throughout your entire degree duration.

My Employer is taking care of my Health Insurance and so I do not need one

PhD Scholars

Research scholars pursuing doctoral programs abroad need long-term protection during their multi-year stay. This insurance covers lab accidents, medical issues, study interruptions and emergency trips home, letting you focus completely on your research work without financial worries.

My Employer is taking care of my Health Insurance and so I do not need one

Exchange Students

Short-term exchange programs still expose you to health risks and travel uncertainties in foreign countries. Even for semester-long stays, having travel insurance for students studying abroad protects you from unexpected medical bills, lost baggage and other emergencies that could disrupt your exchange experience.

My Employer is taking care of my Health Insurance and so I do not need one

Vocational Courses

Students enrolled in vocational training, diploma programs or skill-based courses abroad need protection too. Whether it's culinary school, hospitality training or technical certification programs, insurance for students studying abroad covers medical emergencies and travel mishaps during your practical learning period.

My Employer is taking care of my Health Insurance and so I do not need one

Internships

International internships often don't provide comprehensive health coverage despite being work-related travel. Student travel insurance fills this gap by covering medical emergencies, accidents during commute, lost documents and liability issues while you gain valuable international work experience.

My Employer is taking care of my Health Insurance and so I do not need one

Short-term Certifications

Even brief courses lasting a few weeks or months need insurance coverage abroad. Short-term certification programs, workshops and training courses still expose you to medical risks, travel delays and baggage issues that this affordable insurance effectively protects against.

Types of Student Travel Insurance Plans

criterio

Basic Plan

Our Basic plan is specially designed for students going to universities where medical cover must be taken locally. This plan focuses on non-medical protection, including passport loss up to $100, total baggage loss up to $1,000, personal accident, personal liability, bail bond, study interruption, sponsor protection and compassionate visit benefits. It's perfect when your university already provides mandatory local health insurance.

criterio

Standard Plan

The Standard plan offers entry-level medical coverage up to $50,000 along with all basic protection benefits. You get dental treatment coverage, accidental death via common carrier protection and essential travel-related benefits. This affordable plan suits students with moderate university insurance requirements and provides balanced protection during your entire course duration overseas.

criterio

Silver Plan

Our Silver plan provides enhanced medical expenses coverage up to $100,000 for more comprehensive protection during your studies abroad. This mid-tier option is suitable for students doing lengthier courses in nations with modest healthcare expenditures since it is affordable and offers strong medical protection.

criterio

Gold Plan

The Gold plan offers strong medical coverage up to $250,000, with better passport replacement limits too. It gives you more legal protection and higher bail money if needed. This plan is great for students going to expensive countries like the USA or the UK, where even a simple doctor visit can cost thousands of dollars.

criterio

Platinum Plan

This plan provides the highest level of medical coverage up to $500,000, making it our most comprehensive option. With maximum limits for passport loss, personal liability and bail bond coverage, you get complete protection against all possible risks. This plan is ideal for students in high-cost destinations with university-mandated high coverage requirements and wanting absolute peace.

criterio

Multi-Year Student Travel Insurance

Unlike regular travel insurance that covers only short trips, our student plans can be purchased for up to 2 years at once, matching your course duration. This eliminates the hassle of buying multiple policies and often works out cheaper than renewing short-term policies repeatedly throughout your undergraduate or postgraduate program abroad.

criterio

Course Duration-Based Plans

Our plans are specifically designed around your actual study period, not just calendar months. Whether you're going for a 6-month certificate program, a 1-year postgraduate course or a 2-year undergraduate program, you can choose the exact duration you need. We also offer an automatic 7-day extension for airline delays and a 30-day extension for medical emergencies beyond policy expiry.

New Zealand and other Asia-Pacific countries offer quality education in scenic locations with growing opportunities. Having International student travel insurance protects you from unexpected medical bills and travel emergencies, which ensures a smooth study experience in these increasingly popular destinations among Indian students.

Student Travel Insurance Requirements by Universities

American universities strictly require all international students to show proof of comprehensive health insurance before enrollment. Most colleges want coverage between $100,000 to $500,000 that includes emergency hospital treatment and sending you back home if needed for serious medical reasons.
British universities check insurance coverage during the visa application process and course registration. They require students to have health insurance covering medical emergencies, repatriation and personal liability throughout the entire duration of their undergraduate or postgraduate programs.
Canadian institutions mandate provincial or private health insurance for international students from day one. They check your insurance during admission. Some universities have their own insurance plans, but you can also buy from outside companies as long as they meet their basic requirements.
Australian colleges require Overseas Student Health Cover or equivalent travel insurance for the complete study period. They won't let you register until they see proof that you have insurance. You must also show proof that you have enough medical insurance in case of an emergency when you apply for a visa.
European universities, especially in Germany, France and the Netherlands, require insurance to obtain your student visa. Your plan must cover hospital visits, medical treatment, emergency return to India and sometimes accidental damage to others. The exact minimum amounts differ between countries and specific universities.

How to Choose the Best Student Travel Insurance?

criterio

Check Medical Coverage Amount

Look for plans that cover medical costs for at least $100,000 to $500,000, based on the country you will be travelling to. In places like the USA, where healthcare costs are very high, having more coverage is important to avoid getting stuck with huge hospital bills during situations. Finding the best health insurance for students studying abroad protects you from high medical bills.

criterio

Compare Plan Costs and Premiums

Student insurance usually costs just 1-1.5% of your course fees, which is quite affordable. Look at different insurance companies offering similar coverage and compare their prices. But remember, do not pick the cheapest option without checking what's actually covered in the plan.

criterio

Understand Deductibles Clearly

A deductible is the amount you pay first before insurance kicks in for each claim. Plans with lower deductibles cost more but mean less out-of-pocket expense during emergencies. Based on your budget and level of comfort with risk, pick deductibles that you can easily pay.

criterio

Match Your Course Duration

You should get student insurance from beginning to end. It is common practice to purchase plans for students for a period of up to two years at a time. As long as you provide evidence, you will be able to extend the duration of the coverage in the future if your course is longer.

criterio

Follow Your Destination's Rules

Different countries have specific insurance students studying abroad requirements for student visas and university admission. Check what minimum coverage, benefits and policy terms your destination country and chosen university require, then select a plan meeting all those mandatory guidelines.

criterio

Consider Important Add-ons

Basic plans cover medical emergencies well. But add-ons give extra protection for things like mental health support, pregnancy costs, sports injuries or adventure activities. Think about your lifestyle, health needs and course activities to decide which extras you should add.

Cost of Student Travel Insurance

Factors Affecting Premium

Age of the Student

Younger students typically pay lower premiums because they're considered lower health risk. As age increases, especially beyond 25 years, insurance costs go up slightly since older students may face more health issues requiring medical attention during their stay abroad.

Course Duration Length

Longer courses need more extended coverage, which increases the total premium amount. A four-year undergraduate degree costs more to insure than a six-month certificate program. However, buying longer-duration policies together often works out cheaper than multiple short-term renewals.

Study Destination Country

Countries with expensive healthcare, like the USA, UK and Australia, have higher insurance premiums. Destinations with lower medical costs, like some European or Asian countries, cost less to insure. The premium reflects the typical treatment expenses you might face in that location.

Medical History Background

Students with pre-existing health conditions may need to pay additional premiums for coverage. In most cases, standard rates are associated with a clean medical background. Some insurers ask for medical questionnaires or check-ups before issuing policies to students with known health issues.

Sum Insured Amount

Higher coverage limits naturally cost more in premiums. A plan with $500,000 medical cover costs more than $100,000 coverage. Pick coverage based on where you're going and what your university asks for. Don't go too low just to save money - proper protection is important.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the best student travel insurance?

The best student travel insurance offers high medical coverage (up to $500,000), study interruption benefits, sponsor protection, compassionate visit coverage and affordable premiums around 1-1.5% of your course fee. IndusInd General Insurance's Platinum or Gold plans provide comprehensive protection with 24/7 support, covering medical emergencies, lost documents, baggage and tuition fee refunds during study interruptions.

Is it mandatory for studying abroad?

Yes, most countries and universities make student travel insurance mandatory for visa approval and admission. The USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany and France all require proof of insurance before you can enrol. Even if not mandatory, it's essential because overseas medical treatment is extremely expensive and insurance protects you from huge bills and unexpected emergencies.

Does it cover medical expenses?

Student travel insurance covers hospital stays, doctor visits, operations, prescriptions, dental injuries, ambulance bills and medical evacuation back to India. Coverage ranges from $50,000 to $500,000, depending on your plan. It also covers emergency treatment for life-threatening situations arising from pre-existing diseases if you disclose them while buying.

Are laptops covered?

Yes, up to $1,000 in lost or stolen checked bags is covered. If the airline completely loses your checked-in baggage containing your laptop, you get compensation. However, partial damage is not covered. For items worth over $100, you need to show proof of ownership, like purchase receipts or invoices, when claiming for lost study equipment.

What is sponsor protection?

Sponsor protection covers your tuition fees if the person paying for your education (sponsor) passes away due to an accident or gets critically ill during your policy period. You get coverage up to $10,000 to continue your studies. This ensures you can complete your course even when your financial sponsor back home can no longer support you financially.

What if I extend my course?

You can extend your policy once during your trip at our discretion, but the total duration, including extension, cannot exceed 2 years (730 days). Submit a declaration mentioning any claims filed and confirm you're unaware of health conditions that could cause claims. If you've only claimed for baggage, passport or travel delays, an extension is easier. Automatic extensions apply for medical emergencies and airline delays.
