Types of Visas for Switzerland
Indian citizens require a valid Schengen visa to enter Switzerland, as there is no visa-free arrangement between the two countries. Switzerland offers several visa categories depending on your travel purpose, duration of stay. All visa applications must be submitted through VFS Global for your Swiss adventure.
Airport Transit Visa
Indian citizens do not need an Airport Transit Visa when transiting through Swiss airports to non-Schengen destinations, as long as they remain in the international transit area. However, if you plan to leave the airport during your layover, you’ll need a regular short-stay/tourist visa instead.
Tourist Visa
The Schengen Tourist Visa allows entry and stays up to 90 days within 180 days for tourism, visits or short-term language studies. Applications can be submitted up to six months before travel. Processing takes several weeks, so apply well in advance for your Switzerland trip.
Visitor Visa
The Switzerland Visitor Visa is for visiting family or friends for less than 90 days. EU/EFTA citizens' family members can apply directly at the Swiss Embassy and Consulates with an appointment. Required documents include a passport, photos, an application form and relationship proof. Spouses of EU nationals have simplified requirements.
Work Visa
Switzerland offers work permits for up to 120 days (short-term) and over 120 days (long-term). For long-term work, employers must first get approval from Swiss cantonal authorities before visa application. Short-term permits can be applied for directly. Processing takes 8-12 weeks through official channels.
Student Visa - Short Term
The Switzerland Short-Term Student Visa (Type C) is for educational stays up to 90 days, including language courses, summer schools or exchange programs. Students need admission confirmation, financial proof and accommodation details. This visa doesn't allow employment and requires advance application processing.
Family Reunification Visa
