Vietnam Visa for Indians

Handshake Image

Planning a trip to Vietnam? Indian travellers need a valid visa to enter the country, whether for tourism, business or education. Vietnam also offers e-Visa, visa on arrival and embassy-issued visas for Indians, each with specific requirements.

Vietnam, known for its stunning landscapes, rich history and vibrant culture, is a popular destination for Indian travellers. In fact, the Vietnam Authority of Tourism recorded 501,000 Indian tourists visiting Vietnam in 2024, making India its 6th largest source market. From exploring Hanoi’s heritage sites, cruising in Halong Bay or experiencing the energy of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam offers something for everyone. Beyond these experiences, visitors can also enjoy authentic Vietnamese cuisine, shop at bustling local markets, and immerse themselves in traditional festivals that showcase the country’s vibrant spirit.

To enjoy a hassle-free journey and ensure your visa application succeeds, it’s crucial to understand Vietnam’s visa rules, documentation requirements, and eligibility criteria before you apply. Proper preparation saves time and avoids delays.

Vietnam Visa: All You Need to Know

You’re required to have a Vietnam visa before you enter the country. Depending on your travel purpose, you can apply for an e-Visa or a visa-on-arrival (VoA). Both options allow for stays of up to 90 days (for single and multiple entries).

For a visa on arrival, you need to apply through a travel agency and get a Pre-Approval letter first. You need to show this document at immigration to get your VoA once you arrive, or you will not be allowed entry into Vietnam. You should also note that the VoA is only available at designated airports, such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang.

If you’re travelling for business, work or are planning to study at a university in Vietnam, you can apply for a Vietnam business (DN1 & DN2), work (LD) or student visa. Each visa type has specific criteria and documents. Prepare carefully with valid proofs like invitation letters or contracts to avoid delays.

Do note that these visas require sponsorship, meaning your Vietnamese employer or the university must apply on your behalf, and you will need to submit your visa-related documents to them instead. This process ensures compliance with Vietnam’s regulations and helps streamline your application for faster approval.

Vietnam Visa Insights

In 2024, Vietnam issued nearly 1.5 million e-visas, and Indian travel agencies reported a 146% growth in Vietnam visa applications.

With this influx of Indian tourists into Vietnam, many Vietnamese low-cost carriers like Vietjet Air have introduced festive sales with tickets for as low as ₹11* to major cities like Da Nang, which 50% of all Indian tourists to Vietnam chose as their main destination.

Types of Vietnam Visa for Indians

Vietnam offers different visa types based on your travel purpose, be it tourism, business or transit. Understanding the right visa ensures a smooth entry and stay in the country. To avoid the risk of travel disruptions or cancellations, it is advised to submit your Vietnam e-Visa application at least 7-40 working days before your planned departure. Working days exclude weekends and Vietnamese national public holidays.

Visa Renewal/Extension

icon

Check Your Visa Eligibility

Verify your eligibility based on the type of visa and the duration of your stay. Most visas including business and work visas are eligible for renewals and extensions. However, an e-Visa generally can't be renewed, so you'll need to apply for a new e-Visa.
icon

Prepare Your Documents

Gather all the required documents like your passport, form NA5 (application form for visa extension), bank statements and proof of accommodation (address of the place you're currently staying at). For business visas you will need to also present a sponsor letter.

icon

Visit the Immigration Office

Visit one of the two working offices of the Immigration Department - Ministry of Public Security: 44-46 Tran Phu, Ba Dinh, Hanoi (OR) 333-335-337 Nguyen Trai, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City.
icon

Submit Application & Pay Fees

Apply for the renewal and pay the renewal fees. Ensure you ask for and maintain any receipts and acknowledgement forms as these will have your application number.
icon

Wait for Processing

Wait for the processing, which lasts about 5-7 days. Once your visa renewal or extension is approved you will need to visit the Immigration Department in person to collect your visa and passport.

Application submission time is from Monday to Friday and Saturday morning every week (except Vietnam public holidays). Working hours: 8:00 am to 11:00 am (morning); 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm (afternoon). You can find the full instructions for Vietnam visa renewal or extension at the Vietnam Immigration Department Portal.

Do I need a Vietnam tourist visa to go on vacation in Vietnam?

Yes, Indian citizens need a visa to go to Vietnam for tourism. They can apply for a tourist e-Visa or a Visa on Arrival (VoA), both options allow single and multiple entries.

Do Indians get a Vietnam visa easily?

Yes, Indian citizens can get a Vietnam visa easily. The e-Visa is the most convenient option with a processing time of 3 to 5 working days, provided you have all your documents in order. We recommend applying in advance and checking your passport validity requirements beforehand.

Which is better, a Vietnam e-Visa or a Visa on Arrival (VoA)?

An e-Visa is better than a visa on arrival for most travellers. It is easy to apply for, quicker to process and helps you skip the long lines for a VoA at airports. On the other hand, a visa on arrival is useful for urgent or special cases.

Currently (as of 2025), you can enter Vietnam through 13 international airports with your visa on arrival pre-approval letter or e-Visa. Here are all the airports that offer this facility:

Noi Bai (Ha Noi), Tan Son Nhat (Ho Chi Minh City), Cam Ranh (Khanh Hoa), Phu Cat (Binh Dinh), Lien Khuong (Lam Dong), Da Nang, Cat Bi (Hai Phong), Can Tho, Phu Quoc (Kien Giang), Phu Bai (Thua Thien Hue), Van Don (Quang Ninh), Tho Xuan (Thanh Hoa), Dong Hoi (Quang Binh).

In case you're entering Vietnam by land or sea, you can check the other border gates on the official Vietnam Tourism website.

Is travel insurance required for Vietnam?

Travel insurance for Vietnam is not a mandatory visa requirement, but it is highly recommended. Our travel insurance for Vietnam covers unforeseen incidents like medical emergencies, trip cancellations and lost baggage, ensuring a smooth journey to Vietnam.

What type of visa should I apply for?

You must select a visa type based on the purpose of your trip – tourism, business, work or study. For example, if you're visiting as a tourist, you will need to apply for an e-Visa or a visa on arrival approval letter. Additionally, you should decide between single-entry and multiple-entry visas, depending on how often you plan to visit Vietnam.

Is the Vietnam e-Visa fee refundable if my visa application is rejected or cancelled?

No, the Vietnam e-Visa fee is non-refundable under all circumstances. The fee covers the processing of your application and is not dependent on whether your visa is approved or rejected. Once submitted, the payment cannot be refunded, so please ensure all your information is accurate before applying.

In cases where you've purchased travel insurance for your trip and your visa is rejected, we offer a 100%* refund on the premiums you've paid to buy the policy from us.

How can I avoid a visa rejection?

Here are some ways to ensure your Vietnam visa application doesn’t get rejected –

  • Incorrect Information: Missing or incorrect information is a common reason for visa rejections. Therefore, ensure that all sections of your application are completed accurately and double-check your details before submission.

  • Wrong Documents: Submitting incorrect or outdated documents, such as an expired passport or missing photos, can lead to the denial of a Vietnam visa. So, always verify the list of required documents based on the visa type you are applying for.

  • Use Official Channels: Always apply through official portals. For example, if you’re applying for an e-Visa, the portal operates only on two domains – / & /

  • Past Visa Violations: If you’ve overstayed or violated visa conditions in the past, your application may get rejected. If this is your first time travelling overseas, ensure you check your visa's validity and duration of stay dates. Additionally, verify which entry and exit ports are accessible with a Vietnam e-Visa.
