Types of General Insurance
General insurance is your everyday safety net. It steps in when life throws curveballs – fixing a dented car, repairing a rain-soaked ceiling, paying a hospital bill or salvaging a derailed trip. Think of it as a set of practical covers, including motor, home, health, and travel, that help you recover costs and get back on track without draining your plans or savings.
Why does it matter now? Hospital bills and road risks are rising fast in India. For instance, the average health insurance claim jumped 11.35% in FY24 to ₹70,558, reflecting steeper medical costs. Climate and travel shocks add to the picture. As travel rebounds, travel insurance sales rose 18.95% year-on-year in Q1 2025, a sign that more people want protection against disruptions abroad.
At IndusInd General Insurance (previously Reliance General Insurance), you’ll find clear, practical cover across Health, Motor, Home, Travel, Commercial and more, so you can choose what fits your life today and your goals tomorrow.
And managing it is simple. With the IndusInd Self-i App, you can initiate and track claims digitally, renew policies in minutes and find nearby network hospitals and garages, all from your phone, with real-time updates that speed things up when it matters most.

Difference Between General Insurance and Life Insurance
Insurance comes in two main types: general insurance and life insurance. Each serves a different purpose in protecting you and your loved ones. This table will help you better understand the key differences between the two:
Basis of Comparison | General Insurance | Life Insurance |
|---|---|---|
Coverage | Protects assets/expenses (car, home, health) from non-life risks, such as accidents, damage, and theft. | Covers a person’s life and pays the family a fixed, pre-determined amount on the policyholder’s death. |
Policy Duration | Short-term coverage. Typically lasts 1 year and needs to be renewed regularly. | Long-term coverage. Life insurance policies usually span many years or even a lifetime. |
Claim Payout | The payout is based on the actual financial loss from a covered event. The insurance company reimburses or directly pays for the damage or costs (up to the coverage limit). | Life insurance pays out a pre-decided amount (sum assured) when the insured passes away during the policy term. |
Premiums | Short-term premiums. Generally lower. You usually pay the premium once per policy term (e.g. annually for a yearly policy) to keep the coverage active. | Long-term premiums. They are paid regularly over many years (monthly, quarterly, or yearly). Often higher overall than general insurance premiums. |

Key Takeaways
Insurance already makes a real difference in India. In FY 2023–24, India’s non-life insurers shouldered ₹1.72 lakh crore in net incurred claims, reflecting how general insurance pays when it matters. The broader market also experienced growth; non-life premiums underwritten reached ₹2.90 lakh crore in FY24, indicating a stronger adoption of protection.
What this means for you: life’s shocks like hospital stays, car accidents, floods and stolen baggage can wipe out savings. From motor mishaps and property damage to travel delays and liability claims, surprises can be costly. With the right cover, those bills don’t derail your plans.
With IndusInd General Insurance (previously Reliance General Insurance), you get practical protection, fast digital support, and live every day freely, without worrying about sudden mishaps draining your savings.
Keep the IndusInd Self-i App handy to keep all your policy-related documents in one place, and be a part of our digital-first approach!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What should I check before buying a general insurance policy?
Start with your needs (health, motor, home, travel, SME). Then review:
- Coverage & exclusions (what’s in / out, sub-limits, waiting periods)
- Sum insured & deductibles (enough to cover real costs)
- Premium vs budget (value, not just the lowest price)
- Cashless network & add-ons (hospitals, garages, riders)
- Claims experience (settlement record, documentation, TAT, app support)
Can I buy general insurance online?
Yes. You can compare plans, get quotes and buy or renew in minutes. With the IndusInd Self-i App, you can also upload KYC, receive policy documents instantly and manage claims digitally.
What are the eligibility criteria for general insurance in India?
It varies by product:
- Health: age limits, medical history/KYC
- Motor: valid RC, inspection (if required), previous policy details
- Home/SME: ownership/tenancy proof, property details, security measures
- Travel: age, trip duration, destination
Your KYC documents and truthful declarations are mandatory.
Which type of insurance is “most important”?
There’s no one-size-fits-all. Choose by risk: health for medical costs, motor for legal compliance and own-damage cover, home for property protection, and travel for trip risks. Pair general insurance with life insurance if you want to protect your family’s future income.
What are the two main categories of insurance?
- General Insurance (non-life): health, motor, home, travel, SME.
- Life Insurance: financial protection in case of the insured person’s death (or specified events).
What are the Principles of Insurance?
Seven key ideas guide fair contracts: good faith, insurable interest, indemnity, proximate cause, subrogation, contribution and loss minimisation. They ensure claims are assessed consistently and transparently.
What if a principle is violated?
It can lead to delays, claim denials or even policy voidance. Always disclose facts accurately, follow policy terms, and keep proper records to ensure smooth claims.
Are there any tax benefits under general insurance?
Health insurance premiums may offer tax benefits under Section 80D (as per prevailing law). For businesses, certain general insurance premiums may be treated as expenses. Tax rules change; please consult your tax advisor.
What is a claim in general insurance?
A claim is your formal request asking the insurer to pay for a covered loss/expense under your policy. Submit the claim form and required documents. Once approved, we will pay directly (cashless) or reimburse you up to the policy limits.
Is general insurance an indemnity contract? What does that mean for you?
Yes. A general insurance policy operates on the principle of indemnity, promising to repay the actual financial loss you incur when a covered event, such as a car accident, hospital stay, or home or business-related mishap, affects your finances. The payout is limited to what it costs to get you back to the same financial position you were in before the accident; it’s not a savings plan or a windfall.
