Own Damage Car Insurance
Own-damage (OD) car insurance is a standalone policy that covers damage to your car caused by accidents, fire, man-made or natural disasters and theft. It can be purchased only if you already have a valid third-party car policy.
For instance, if you get car insurance from the dealer when buying a new car, the own damage coverage you get under the plan will only be for a year, while the third-party coverage will be for three years. In this case, you can buy the IndusInd own damage car insurance policy to ensure your car stays covered once the dealer's 1-year OD plan expires. If you're looking for a car policy, with IndusInd General Insurance (formerly known as Reliance General Insurance), you can get an own-damage car insurance plan separately or bundled with third-party insurance.
We also offer options to increase coverage through our 13+ add-ons (and 3 EV add-ons), cashless claims at over 11,000 network garages, and quick online processes for claims and renewals.
IndusInd Own Damage Car Insurance (formerly Reliance Own Damage Car Insurance) is a smart choice for car owners who want complete control over their car’s protection. To ensure maximum flexibility, we offer both long-term and short-term OD plans to suit your needs.
What is Own Damage Car Insurance?
Own damage car insurance is a standalone car insurance cover that protects your own vehicle against losses caused by accidents, theft, fire, floods, earthquakes, and other natural or man-made events. In simple terms, it pays for the repair or replacement of your car if it gets damaged - something a basic third-party policy does not do.
As per IRDAI rules, third-party (TP) car insurance is mandatory in India, while own damage (OD) cover is optional. However, an own damage insurance for cars can be purchased only if your car already has a valid third-party insurance policy. This makes own damage insurance for car owners an important add-on for complete financial protection.
How Standalone Own Damage Insurance Works
When you buy a new car, dealers usually provide a long-term third-party policy (3 years) along with 1 year of own damage cover. After the first year, the own damage portion expires, but the third-party cover continues. To keep your car protected against accidents and theft, you can buy a standalone own damage policy from your preferred insurer.
Own damage cover can be taken either as a standalone own damage policy (along with an active TP policy) or as part of a comprehensive car insurance plan that bundles OD and TP together.
When Can You Buy a Standalone Own Damage Policy?
If your car was purchased after September 2018 and has a long-term third-party policy
If your own damage cover has expired, but third-party insurance is still valid
When you want to switch insurers for better OD pricing or add-ons
If you currently have only a third-party policy and want protection for your own car
After a policy renewal, when choosing OD separately instead of a full comprehensive plan

Who Should Buy Own Damage Car Insurance?
New Car Owners
New cars come with high repair and replacement costs, especially in the first 3–5 years. While third-party insurance is mandatory, it does not protect your own vehicle. Having car insurance for own damage ensures your investment is covered against accidents, theft, fire, and natural disasters from day one.
New or Inexperienced Drivers
New drivers are statistically more prone to minor accidents and scratches. Own damage car insurance acts as a financial safety net by covering repair expenses, helping you avoid unexpected out-of-pocket costs while you gain driving confidence.
Owners with Third-Party Only Policies
If you currently have only a third-party (TP) policy, any damage to your own car must be paid from your pocket. A standalone own damage policy fills this gap by covering repair costs, replacement of parts, and damage due to accidents or disasters.
Owners of Expensive, Luxury or EV Cars
Luxury and electric vehicles have costly parts, advanced electronics, and expensive batteries. Own damage insurance, combined with suitable add-ons like zero depreciation or battery protection, helps manage high repair bills and protects long-term ownership costs.

Tyre Protection
Extra Car Protection
This add-on covers repairs and replacement of tyres and tubes damaged by accidents, cuts or bursts or bulges caused by poor road accidents. Since tyre replacements can be costly, this add-on will ensure your out-of-pocket expenses are reduced.

Consumables Expenses

When your car is damaged, the repair process also involves replacing minor consumables, such as nuts, bolts, oil or brake fluids. These costs can go up to 5%-10% of the total cost. This add-on covers the consumables costs, ensuring complete protection.

Extra Car Protection
If valuable items like your laptop, phone, or bags (worth ₹5,000 or more) are stolen from your locked car, this add-on provides compensation. It reduces the financial strain and helps you recover*, making it ideal for those who frequently carry work or personal items in their vehicle.
Daily Allowance Benefit
Money Saver
If your car is being repaired at any of our network garages for more than 3 days, you can rely on this cover for support. It provides you with a daily cash allowance for alternate travel costs like cab fares or train tickets until your car is back on the road.
EMI Protection Cover
Money Saver
If your car is undergoing repairs at a garage for over 21, 42, or 63 days*, this covers your monthly car loan EMIs for the chosen tenure. This add-on cover will reduce financial stress during unexpected delays, making it ideal for those who pay high monthly EMIs.
EV Battery Protection
EV Care
Protects your electric or hybrid car's battery from damage caused by accidents, water, power surges or mechanical shocks. Since EV batteries are expensive, this add-on is a must-have for EV owners.
Electric Motor Protect
EV Care
The electric motor is vital for your EV’s functioning, but it’s vulnerable to water damage, short circuits, overheating, etc. This add-on covers repair costs for motor damage, sparing you from unexpected expenses.
EV Charger Cover
EV Care
Covers the repair or replacement of your home EV charger, whether damaged by accidents, rat bites, fires, or theft. This add-on ensures your charging equipment stays protected.
NCB Retention Cover
Money Saver
Your NCB discount is only applicable as long as you don't file a claim. But with this add-on, you can retain your NCB discount after filing one claim during the policy year. This way, you can still use your car insurance coverage for major repair costs and enjoy your premium discount.
Electrical Accessories Cover
EV Car Protection
This add-on safeguards any electrical accessories you’ve installed in your car, such as audio systems, parking camera, GPS device, or rearview cameras. These are usually excluded from standard insurance, but with this add-on, your additional upgrades are protected.
Non-Electronics Accessories Cover
EV Car Protection
Customisations such as alloy wheels, decorative fittings, seat covers or bumper guards are not included in regular insurance. This add-on covers the repair or replacement of your fittings if they are damaged in an accident, keeping your personalised fittings secure.
How is Own Damage Insurance Premium Calculated?
Factors that Affect Your OD Premium
IDV (Insured Declared Value)
Own Damage premium is largely based on the IDV of your car — the current market value of the vehicle. A higher IDV means a higher potential payout for total loss, and therefore a higher premium.
Car Age, Make & Model
Newer cars and premium models usually have higher repair costs, resulting in higher OD premiums. Older cars attract lower premiums due to lower IDV.
City / RTO and Usage Pattern
Vehicles registered in busy metro areas often attract higher premiums due to higher accident and theft risk. Car usage patterns (personal vs commercial) also influence pricing.
Previous Claims and NCB (No Claim Bonus)
A claim-free history earns you NCB discounts on your OD premium, reducing the cost each claim-free year. Multiple claims or no NCB can raise your premium.
Voluntary Deductibles & Chosen Add-Ons
Choosing higher voluntary deductibles lowers your premium, while additional covers like zero depreciation and engine protection raise the premium.
How Your Standalone Own Damage Premium is Calculated?
Parameter | Hatchback Example | SUV Example |
|---|---|---|
Car Age | 3 years | 1 years |
IDV | ₹4,50,000 | ₹12,00,000 |
Base OD Premium | ₹3,200 | ₹8,500 |
Zero Dep Add-on | ₹1,200 | ₹3,000 |
Engine Protect Add-on | ₹600 | ₹1,800 |
Final OD Premium | ₹5,000 – ₹5,200 | ₹13,300 – ₹14,000 |
Please Note:Hatchbacks typically have lower IDV and repair costs than SUVs, resulting in lower OD premiums.,Add-ons like zero depreciation and engine protection increase the premium but deliver higher claim payouts,Final premium can vary based on NCB, city, and usage discounts.
