Own-Damage Bike Insurance

knowledge

Own-Damage Bike Insurance, also known as a Standalone Own Damage (SAOD) policy, is a dedicated insurance policy that covers your bike or scooter in the event of damage or loss. For example, it will cover repair costs due to accidents, collisions, natural disasters, fires and bike theft. An SAOD policy is an optional cover that can be purchased separately if you already possess a third-party bike insurance policy, according to IRDAI regulations effective from September 1, 2019.

For instance, if you purchase a new bike or scooter from a dealership, the dealer will typically provide you with a 1-year Own Damage policy along with 5 years of Third-Party insurance in accordance with IRDAI guidelines from August 2020. While your Third-party insurance remains valid, after the first year of your policy, you have the option to buy our SAOD plan to ensure your bike stays covered.

IndusInd own-damage bike insurance (formerly Reliance own-damage bike insurance) offers coverage starting at just ₹19 per month*. Under our plan, you can enhance coverage with 15+ add-ons, including zero depreciation and engine protector, while enjoying quick claims!

What Is Own-Damage Insurance for Bikes?

Own-damage two-wheeler insurance covers loss or damage to your own bike due to accidents, natural disasters, fire and theft. It is also known as standalone own-damage bike insurance, SAOD policy, or simply own-damage insurance for two-wheelers. Unlike third-party insurance, this policy protects your bike and gives you financial support for repairs or replacement.
No, own-damage bike insurance is not mandatory.
Third-party bike insurance is compulsory by law. You must have it to legally ride on Indian roads. On the other hand, own-damage bike insurance is optional but highly recommended. It protects your two-wheeler against unexpected incidents like road accidents, floods, fires, and theft. If you want complete protection for your bike, this policy is a must-have.
1. You buy OD bike insurance after securing a third-party cover.
2. If your bike gets damaged due to an accident or is affected by a natural calamity, you raise a claim.
3. The insurer pays the repair/replacement cost.

Eligibility Criteria for OD Bike Insurance

  • Third-Party Policy Required: The policyholder must already have a valid third-party bike insurance policy. This is mandatory before purchasing a standalone OD cover.

  • Private Use Only: The two-wheeler must be for private use. Commercial vehicles are not eligible unless covered under a special plan.

  • Valid Documents Needed: The vehicle must have a valid Registration Certificate (RC), a Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate, and meet roadworthiness norms.

  • Driving Licence Mandatory: The owner or rider must hold a valid driving licence at the time of buying the policy and also at the time of any claim.

  • Inspection for Older Bikes: If the bike is older or modified, the insurer may request a vehicle inspection before issuing the policy.

  • Five-Year Purchase Window: As per IRDAI’s 2019 guidelines, OD bike insurance can only be purchased within five years from the vehicle’s first registration date.

  • NCB Eligibility Conditions: No Claim Bonus (NCB) benefits apply only if the previous OD policy was active and correctly transferred or renewed without a break.

Factors to Consider when you Buy/Renew OD Insurance Online

Choose the Right Policy Duration

Our Standalone Own Damage Insurance comes with the flexibility of choosing your policy tenure, whether it is for a few months or 5 years*, you can pick an annual, short-term or multi-year OD policy based on your needs. A long-term plan saves you from yearly renewals and premium hikes. A short-term plan offers temporary, affordable coverage.

Adjust the IDV Smartly

Your Insured Declared Value (IDV) is the current market value of your two-wheeler that you get when your vehicle is irreparably damaged or stolen. Your choice of IDV directly affects the premium charged, so it is advisable to keep it at an optimal level to achieve an affordable premium without a significant loss in value during claims.

Check Available Add-Ons

Our 15+ bike insurance add-ons offer comprehensive benefits along with maximum coverage. Choose from add-ons like nil dep, engine protect, helmet cover, and more for comprehensive protection for your bike or scooter.

Highest Partner Garages

An unforeseen incident can occur at any time! No matter where your bike or scooter breaks down in India, our 11,000+ partner garages* ensure you have access to cashless repair services without paying a penny.

add-on

tag

Money Saver

The cost of consumable replacements or additions during repairs can add up and increase your repair bill! add-on

EMI Protection Cover

tag

Money Saver

If your bike is undergoing repairs in an authorised garage for more than 21, 42, or 63 days* due to major damage after an accident, this add-on cover pays up to three of your bike loan EMIs so that your loan doesn’t become a financial stress. A useful cover if you're still paying off your bike loans.

add-on

Daily Allowance Benefit

tag

Money Saver

If your bike or scooter has been under repair in a network garage for more than 2 days, this cover gives you a fixed daily allowance* to help you pay for alternative transport until your bike is back on the road. The amount is decided based on your policy SI and the value of your vehicle.

add-on

You get a daily payout if you are hospitalised for over 24 hours due to injuries from an accident. The coverage kicks in when your hospital stay or admission lasts more than 7 days, and you will receive an additional amount for recovery.

add-on

Two-Wheeler Assistance

tag
Best Seller

This is a 24/7 roadside assistance add-on that helps if your bike breaks down, has a flat tyre, runs out of fuel or gets locked in a remote location with no garages nearby. It covers towing, on-site repairs, fuel delivery and more, so help is always there when you need it.

add-on

Voluntary Deductible

tag

Money Saver

If you choose a voluntary deductible (an amount you agree to pay from each claim before we cover the rest), your premium is reduced. But remember, for every claim (even if your bike is a total loss), you have to pay this amount first before your insurance coverage kicks in.

add-on

E-Bike Battery Protect

tag

EV Bike Protection

It helps cover the cost of repairs or replacement of your EV bike's battery if it is damaged by events such as power surges, water entering the engine, or accidents. This can be a useful add-on since the battery is the most expensive part of an EV bike.

add-on

Electric Motor Protect

tag

On the other hand, comprehensive bike insurance includes both own damage and third-party cover in one policy, offering broader protection.

How Is Own-Damage Bike Insurance Premium Calculated?

criterio

Vehicle-Related Factors

Several vehicle-specific factors affect how own damage insurance two-wheeler premium is calculated. These include your bike’s Insured Declared Value (IDV), which reflects its current market worth. Other factors include the age of the bike, make and model, fuel type, registration zone, and whether it is used for personal or commercial purposes.

Policy-Related Factors

The OD insurance for bike premiums also depends on policy-related choices. A short-term policy usually costs less than a long-term one. Premium also varies based on selected add-ons, the amount of voluntary deductible, No Claim Bonus (NCB) earned from previous years, and your past claim history.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is own damage car insurance, and how is it different from comprehensive insurance?

Own damage car insurance covers only the damage to your own car due to accidents, theft, fire, or natural calamities. A comprehensive policy includes both own damage cover and mandatory third-party liability cover, while a standalone own damage policy does not include third-party protection.

Is standalone own damage car insurance mandatory in India?

No, standalone own-damage car insurance is not mandatory. As per IRDAI rules, only third-party car insurance is compulsory, while own damage cover is optional but strongly recommended to protect your vehicle.

Can I buy own-damage insurance if I already have third-party insurance from another insurer?

Yes, you can buy a standalone own damage policy even if your third-party cover is from a different insurer. The only requirement is that your third-party policy must be active for the same period.

Does own damage car insurance cover engine damage and accessories?

Engine damage is covered only if you have opted for an engine protect add-on; it is not included by default. Electrical and non-electrical accessories are covered if declared and insured, or if you have chosen the relevant add-on.

Can I claim own-damage insurance if someone else was driving my car?

Yes, you can raise a claim even if someone else was driving, provided the driver had a valid driving licence and the car was used as per policy terms. Claims may be rejected if policy conditions are violated.

How many times can I claim under an own damage policy in a year?

There is no fixed limit on the number of claims in a year. However, each claim affects your No Claim Bonus and may increase your premium at the next renewal.

Is own damage car insurance and zero depreciation insurance the same?

No, they are not the same. Own damage insurance is the main cover for damage to your car, while zero depreciation is an add-on that ensures full claim payout without deducting depreciation on parts.

How to save on standalone own-damage car insurance premiums?

The best way to save on premiums would be to buy your car insurance plan online, since online plans are cheaper and offer more discounts. For example, we offer up to 90%* discount. Other ways to further reduce your premiums would be to choose the correct insured declared value (IDV) and voluntary car insurance deductibles. Also, try not to over-insure your car and only get add-ons you need.

What types of own-damage insurance policies does IndusInd General Insurance offer?

We offer 2 types of OD car insurance – a standard yearly plan and a temporary OD cover that offers coverage from one month to a couple of months. You can also opt for a long-term comprehensive bundled plan that can be bought for up to 3 years*.

Is own-damage car insurance mandatory in India?

No. Own-damage car insurance is not mandatory in India. It’s an optional plan for anyone who wants to cover their car against damage or loss.

What is IDV in Car Insurance?

IDV in standalone OD car insurance refers to the maximum value your car can be insured for. It is usually derived from the current market price of the vehicle. Suppose your insured car is stolen or damaged beyond repair. In this case, you will receive a settlement amount equal to the decided IDV after subtracting the depreciation value. Moreover, the IDV of your car is directly linked to the premiums of own-damage car insurance. The higher the IDV, the higher your premium amount will be.

Who should buy standalone own-damage car insurance?

Our standalone own-damage car insurance is ideal for existing third-party car insurance holders, temporary car insurance seekers and budget-conscious customers.

Should I purchase own-damage car insurance online?

Yes. Purchasing own-damage car insurance online will help you avail yourself of up to 90%* discounts. This can help you reduce your premiums to a great extent.

What is the cost of an own-damage car insurance policy?

The cost of a car insurance policy for own-damage is calculated based on factors such as the type of plan, tenure, car’s make and model, registration year, location, and so on. Use our car insurance premium calculator to know your estimated premiums.

How can I reduce the premiums of my own-damage car insurance plan?

The best way to reduce your car insurance premiums is to select higher deductibles. You can also buy your plan online to take advantage of exclusive discounts and rewards.

Can I purchase car insurance for one week for my upcoming road trip?
